Democrat Rob Sand defeated Republican Zach Lahn to win Iowa's gubernatorial race, NBC News projected. The Associated Press also called the race for Sand, handing Democrats a flip of the open governorship. Sand's victory ends more than a decade of Republican control at the Iowa Capitol and breaks the GOP trifecta in the state, according to post-election accounts. Campaign allies and commenters noted Sand ran a statewide, town-hall driven campaign that drew support across party lines. The result arrives alongside other Democratic gains in Iowa reported on election night, including a Democratic pickup in the Senate seat and multiple House seats. Sand will take office as Iowa's governor following certification of the results and the normal post-election transition process.
