Senator Chris Murphy, 53, was hospitalized after suffering a stroke Saturday while attending his son’s hockey game, his chief of staff Allison Herwitt said. Herwitt said Murphy experienced numbness in his arm, was taken to a hospital where imaging confirmed a stroke, and has been transferred to Johns Hopkins for monitoring. Herwitt wrote that doctors are encouraged by his progress, that he is awake and alert, and that he is responding well to treatment with optimism for a full recovery. Murphy has spent recent weeks campaigning for midterm candidates in states including Michigan and Florida. First elected to Congress in 2006, Murphy is a prominent Senate voice on gun reform since the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting and has been mentioned by some observers as a possible presidential candidate in 2028; in a 2025 interview he said anyone thinking about an election in 2028 or 2026 would be foolish because of threats to free and fair elections.

Senator Murphy publicly announced he had COVID in April 2022 & in August 2023. Studies have found that people who’ve had COVID (nearly everyone by now) are twice as likely to have a major cardiac event, such as a heart attack, stroke or even death, for up to three years after infection.
