Channel 4’s Million Pound Shot, fronted by Bradley Walsh, was revealed mid-broadcast to be a staged gameshow designed to expose how gambling companies manipulate players. The programme presented contestants who appeared to stake their own cash on trivia and a final “million pound shot” roulette game; one contestant, Mark, said he would risk his entire £1,000 savings and another, Reece, a teacher on a £30,000 salary, ended up £2,400 in the red. Producer and viewers had speculated the broadcast might be a Derren Brown, style experiment or Ghostwatch-like stunt; journalist Alistair Ryder and producer Chuck Thomas suggested it was likely a stealth anti-gambling drama before Channel 4 confirmed the ruse. Key on-screen moments included a planted heckler and the cast reveal that the contestants and some crew were actors while the real audience remained unaware. The programme also spelled out industry tactics and cited startling figures, including that over half of the gambling industry’s profits come from 5% of customers. Channel 4 provided press screeners in advance and the show’s programme page includes information for viewers affected by gambling, signalling an intent to pair the stunt with support resources.
