Juan Atkins, a founder of Detroit techno and a member of the Belleville Three, has died at 64, his agency told Resident Advisor, saying he was pronounced dead earlier today. Atkins, who released his first record in 1981 and recorded under names including Model 500, Infiniti and as part of Cybotron, is widely credited with shaping electro and techno by blending Detroit’s black musical traditions with synth and club futurism. The Guardian’s profile of Atkins traces his origins from Detroit to the rural town of Belleville, his friendship with Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May, and his influences from Kraftwerk and the Electrifying Mojo radio shows. Major music outlets including Pitchfork, The Guardian and the Detroit Free Press published obituaries and remembrances, while DJs, writers and listeners shared playlists and highlighted classics such as Cybotron’s “Clear.” Resident Advisor and other outlets reported widespread tributes across social media and music communities today. Several commentators and DJs noted that Atkins kept performing into recent years, including appearances at Movement festival and European gigs, and now those performances and his catalog are being revisited in tributes and playlist roundups.
