U.S. oil industry earned over $130 billion in profits during Iran war

The New York Times found U.S. oil and gas companies earned more than $130 billion in profits during the Iran war period, a conservative estimate based on the performance of more than 50 large U.S. producers and refiners in the six months from April through September. That haul was almost three times what businesses producing and refining oil in the United States made in the same period in 2025. Major U.S. firms including ExxonMobil and Chevron reported blockbuster third-quarter earnings as global supply disruptions pushed fuel prices sharply higher. The Times framed the figure as tied to higher retail prices for gasoline, diesel and other fuels paid by consumers. Coverage of the analysis has intensified calls in opinion and political commentary for a windfall profits tax and sharpened criticism that the war has transferred economic gains to the fossil fuel industry.
