A puffin standing in short grass on Lunga took the literal reading of NOP, which asked for any bird name starting with N, O or P. Others answered with size: a pileated woodpecker perched on a huge willow trunk and a bald eagle on a bare branch emphasized the alt theme LargeBirds.

A Meadow Pipit perched on a strand of barbed wire fence in the sunshine. The bird is in the centre of the shot, facing right so its right side is showing. Its head is turned back over its shoulder so that it’s looking at the camera with its left eye. It has a thin bill, dark eyes and brown upper parts with dark black-brown streaking. The wings are darker than the rest of the upper parts. Its breast is buff tinted and heavily marked with dark streaks and its underside is whitish with more muted streaks. Its legs are pinkish and it has a very long hind claw. The bird is on a strand of barbed wire which runs from a concrete dance post in the right hand foreground (which is pocked with black, yellow and white lichen) to a square wooden post in the left hand background. Both posts stop before reaching the top of the frame and the wire runs parallel to the bottom of the shot. The background is a uniform, out of focus green of grassland.

This juvenile Osprey (female I believe) was perched on a brown limb of a large tree with green leaves in the yard of a friend's cottage on Great Diamond Island in Portland, Maine. This bird was one of three juveniles that were sitting together in the tree, and had been fishing in the bay nearby.
