Sam Altman says personal PCs hoarding DRAM is 'quite terrible'

techOct 30, 2026231,524

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a Cheeky Pint interview that "from a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer," arguing personal PCs use that memory only about 5% of the time and that cloud data centers achieve higher utilization. Altman tied the comment to the broader compute shortage the AI boom has caused and said the market's "invisible hand" is failing to funnel DRAM toward large-scale AI deployments. Journalists noted the shortage has pushed consumer hardware prices up this year, citing used PS5 Pro prices reaching $1,399 and disruptions around Nvidia's RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 listings. The article cites Samsung's earnings commentary that memory shipments are already shifting toward AI and data-center demand, signaling the tight supply may persist next year. Altman framed cloud-hosted models as the future of computing, a stance that aligns with pushing more DRAM into hyperscaler data centers rather than into individual machines.

Sam's latest dumb comments were made on Cheeky Pint, a YouTube channel by Stripe co-founder John Collison one of an endless array of tech bro safe-spaces intended to supplant actual journalists asking actual questions of powerful people

i said some months ago that they don't want you to use computers at all and was recently wondering if i sounded overly conspiratorial. i guess not www.tomshardware.com/tech-industr...

From a global allocation perspective, it's quite terrible to have OpenAI and other frontier labs using a bunch of the world's capital to pump climate pollution into the atmosphere when we're already at 427ppm.

I hope we don't end up in the bad timeline where personal computers are just the sun ray and they don't even look as good

If there's one thing this guy does and does better than perhaps anybody, it's continue to say the dumbest shit you've ever heard somebody say.

Centralized compute has always been a shit idea Network terminals are authoritarian

These guys are chronically unable to shut up and then remain baffled why so many people don’t like the sand that thinks

Boo-tros Boo-tros Ghoulish2

From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible for humans to have individual sentience. If all of the biomass on Earth was reallocated to create more compute, then who knows? The planet could be maximally monetized to turn everything into even more money.

Ghost of a Werewolf2

They have always wanted this. Steve Jobs wanted this when he didn't want apps on phones. Everything should just be cloud shit and web apps. This theft of tech power away from the people is frankly insane to watch in real time.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman thinks it's "terrible" for people to have RAM in their computers rather than in a data center, as the scarcity of memory caused by the AI boom continues to drive up costs. https://bit.ly/47LJ09d
