Bird of the Day, theme 'Frightful Feathers'

natureOct 30, 20262319,945

A misty crow perched on a wooden post carried the literal Halloween mood. Others read fright as ocular drama, for example a white-tailed kite at sunrise with glowing red eyes. Some took the alt prompt of #MostSeen instead, illustrated by a black-capped chickadee from Bruce Peninsula as an everyday familiar.

An all black bird perched on the edge of a wooden post. It is a misty morning and, soft light from the left highlights the bird's back.

Bobbin the Robin. Robins are one of the most commonly seen birds in the UK. Partly because there are a lot of them but also because they're not exactly shy.

A Sparrowhawk close up shot. The is visible from the breast up and takes up the shot bottom to centre of the shot. It is facing and looking directly at the camera with both yellow eyes staring. The bird has a grey, hooked beak with a yellow cere and bright yellow eyes with large black pupils. Its head is brown and neck, breast, belly and underparts are a creamish white with heavy brown barring. To the right of the bird there is a thin branch in the foreground covered with black leaves, with small branches visible to the left. The background is a white grey sky

Photo by Kort Duce A turkey vulture perches high in a dead snag along St. Vrain Creek as the moon sets in Longmont, Colorado. In this horizontal color photograph, a turkey vulture perches atop the forked branches of a dead snag, its head turned to the right as it surveys the landscape below. Positioned in the left side of the frame, the bird stands against a brilliant blue sky; a signature of Colorado's more than 300 days of sunshine each year. In the upper right corner, a Waning Gibbous Moon hangs above the horizon. This lunar phase follows the Full Moon, with the illuminated portion gradually decreasing each night. This photograph is a focus stack created from two separate images. The first photograph was focused on the turkey vulture, while the second was focused on the moon. When using a super-telephoto lens, it is not physically possible to render both the nearby bird and the distant moon perfectly sharp in a single exposure because of the extremely shallow depth of field. By carefully combining the two images during post-processing, both subjects appear in sharp focus. An incredible portrait of a turkey vulture perched along the riparian corridor of St. Vrain Creek with a setting Waning Gibbous Moon; a scene that highlights both the beauty of Colorado's natural landscapes and the habitat so vital to this remarkable scavenger.

A action shot of a small raptor, an Nankeen kestrel, captured mid-flight as it descends towards bare tree branches. The kestrel faces right with its beak open and yellow talons extended downward, ready to perch. Its wings are fully arched upward and forward, revealing pale, speckled underfeathers, while its tail is fanned wide, displaying a distinctive reddish-brown pattern edged with a black band and white tips. The background features a soft, overcast grey sky with out-of-focus, silhouetted branches.

I love visiting ponds and lakes so the birds I see most often are ducks. They often appear on my photos when I may be taking photos of something else.
