Abdul El‑Sayed to campaign alongside Haley Stevens in Detroit

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed will campaign Sunday in Detroit alongside former primary rival Rep. Haley Stevens at a get-out-the-vote event at a Detroit church, and the two will be joined by South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn. The appearance is their first public event together in months and comes two days before the Nov. 3 election; Michigan early voting began Oct. 24. The joint stop follows a razor-thin Aug. 4 primary that left lingering divisions after Stevens, who drew strong support from Jewish and Black voters, narrowly lost to El-Sayed. Tensions flared this week when Stevens’ fiance, Jason Turkish, told The Detroit News he would vote for Republican Mike Rogers, prompting Stevens to appear on CNN to say she will vote for El-Sayed and urge his campaign to “shut out the hate and call it out.” El-Sayed said the campaign is “always trying to unify the party,” criticized questions about intraparty dynamics, and distanced his campaign from a Rebellion PAC ad linking U.S. support for Israel to grocery prices. Democrats hope the church visit will bolster turnout among the Black and Jewish coalition Stevens emphasized, though its impact is uncertain so close to the election; recent polling cited by local outlets showed El-Sayed leading Rogers by roughly seven points in Michigan.
