Trump floats nominating Ted Cruz to the Supreme Court

At a Oct. 27 campaign rally in Lubbock, Texas, President Donald Trump said he would consider nominating Sen. Ted Cruz to a future Supreme Court vacancy, joking that both parties would unanimously confirm him because “the Democrats will 100% vote for it because they hate the guy” and “the Republicans would 100% vote for it because they can't stand him.” Cruz was in the front row and laughed as Trump made the pitch. Cruz has repeatedly said he is not interested in serving on the Supreme Court, telling the Houston Chronicle in September “I don't want to be a judge.” Trump has previously mentioned Cruz for the high court and has said he regrets nominating Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett after they ruled against his administration. Cruz served as solicitor general of Texas from 2008 to 2013, argued multiple cases before the Supreme Court, graduated from Harvard Law School and clerked for then, Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Cruz, 55, is a close Senate ally of Trump and has signaled interest in a 2028 presidential run; were Trump to appoint him to the court, several likely Republican presidential contenders would see the field narrow. It is unclear whether Trump will have another vacancy to fill; Justice Samuel Alito said in August he plans to remain on the bench through at least the next term.
