Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers with César Chávez, has died at age 96. Huerta helped build the modern farmworker movement, popularized the rallying cry ¡Sí, se puede!, and co-founded the organization that became the United Farm Workers. In March 2026 she told The Times that Chávez had raped her decades earlier, a revelation that many noted she lived long enough to make public. Huerta led strikes and boycotts and helped secure bargaining rights for farmworkers, and she continued organizing into her later years. In a 2026 interview she said, “The most amazing thing I see is when I see people figure out that they have power, and they run with it.” Her death prompted tributes from labor and civil rights figures and renewed focus on both her organizing legacy and her 2026 testimony about Chávez.
