Bird of the Day, theme 'Branched'

natureOct 27, 20261132,586

A Bohemian Waxwing perched on a thorny branch laden with dark berries defined one literal reading. Others framed scale: a Great Blue Heron poised in a leafless tree turned branches into architecture. The alt reading, grounded, appeared as a swan resting on fallen autumn leaves. It asked for birds on thin branches.

A European Robin perched on a thin branch, singing in the bright sunshine. The bird is right of centre of the frame, facing the camera so its underside can be seen. Its head is turned to the left so the left side is visible. Its head has brown on the top of its head and orange-red on the face and neck. Its thin, sharp beak is open in song. The breast is orange-red and underparts are white. The underside of its brown tail can be seen also. The bird is perched on a long thin branch with small thin twigs poking out of each side throughout. The branch comes from the bottom right and extends diagonally across the shot, ending before reaching the left hand side. A smaller branch can be seen in the bottom right of the foreground and three others are visible in the background behind the bird. The bright, golden morning sunshine is shining in from the left and highlighting the birds face, breast and underbelly. The branches in the background are a golden colour from the sunshine. The rest of the background is a clear blue sky

A laughing kookaburra perches upright on a slender tree branch, looking alertly toward the left side of the frame. It features an off-white head and chest, a prominent brown stripe across its dark eye, a heavy horn-coloured beak, and deep brown wings highlighted with subtle blue feathers. Its striped tail points downward, set against a softly blurred, warm natural background of leafy branches and dappled sunlight.

A Bohemian Waxwing perches on a thin, thorny branch among clusters of dark blue-black berries, with a berry held in its open beak. The bird has a pale brown-grey body, a pointed crest with a rusty-orange tint, a black eye mask and black throat, and grey wings with white and yellow markings. Its tail ends in a bright yellow tip, with chestnut-red under the tail. The bird is turned slightly to the left, looking up as it swallows. The background is a soft tangle of bare twigs and a few green-yellow leaves, with raindrops hanging on the berries and branches. The light is soft and overcast. Photo by Geert Klein Breteler.

A bright, warm-brown Carolina Wren perched in profile against a soft green background. The bird features a prominent white eyebrow stripe extending over its dark eye, buff-coloured underparts, a long downward-curved bill, and a long, barred tail held upward. Text on card: A small but powerfully voiced wren resident year-round from Nebraska and southern Ontario south through the eastern United States to Mexico and Central America, inhabiting dense shrubby undergrowth, thickets, forest edges, parks, and suburban gardens. Warm rusty-brown above with a bold white eyebrow stripe; despite its small size, its song - teakettle-teakettle-teakettle - is startlingly loud. 📷: Photo by Dan Pancamo via Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 2.0) https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Carolina_Wren1.jpg
