Obama compares Trump White House decor to a 'Cheesecake Factory'; Trump lashes out

newsOct 26, 202631983

Speaking at a Saturday rally in Ohio, former President Barack Obama quipped, "He's got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory," as he campaigned in twin rallies in Ohio and Michigan for Democratic tickets. The joke targeted what Obama described as excessive gold and oversized renovations to the Trump-era White House, and DailyKos cited Eater's description and the restaurant's interior designer calling the chain's look "one of the most horrible-looking places around." Conservative social media and Republican commentators pushed back, with DailyKos saying Republicans "dusted off their old pretend-outrage playbook," and former Ted Cruz staffer Steve Guest defended The Cheesecake Factory on X. Coverage reports that President Donald Trump lashed out at Obama over the remark, calling it "filth" and attacking Obama personally. The exchange quickly became a focal point for partisan messaging over decor and presidential dignity as both sides pressed their midterm campaign narratives in Ohio and Michigan.

This is even stupider than the usual FNC fauxburger. I like the Cheesecake Factory. I eat there regularly with friends. And yes, the décor is tacky. I don't go there for the décor, but for the food—which I like. President Obama made a statement solely about the décor. One few would disagree with.

But the most important thing everyone needs to remember is this: take the person in America you think has more contempt for the working class and middle class than absolutely anyone, then quadruple that amount of contempt, and you'll be *entering the suburbs* of how Fox News feels about such people.

I don't even think his statement is remotely anti-Cheesecake factory. Whether a chain restaurant should be decorated that way is not the question Obama raised. He was pointing out that the White House should not be decorated like a chain restaurant.

I had not realized that the prosperity of the American workingman depended upon his willingness to defend the upholstery of a restaurant. We live in an age of remarkable discoveries.

Obama said Trump, "has the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory." That's funny. It's not a joke about CF's decor, it's a riff on Trump's autocratic chic, a category architects are familiar with. Saying it's an attack on popular tastes is just disingenuous bleating.

It's okay if the Cheesecake Factory is tacky, it's still fun. The people's house, the White House, should be a presentation of dignity and seriousness. But yeah, it looks tacky.

Yep, they're all going on about selection & affordability at Cheesecake Factory, which has absolutely nothing to do with what Obama said. I just wanted to enjoy my retirement. Worked my ass off, saved & invested enough to retire 5 years early and every day is all this constant bullshit. It sucks!
