Bird of the Day, theme 'On One Leg'

natureOct 26, 20261092,859

A very round dunlin standing on one leg at the waterline gave the theme its literal shorebird reading. Others framed rest and sleep, such as sleeping avocets on the mud in Shropshire. The theme asked for birds seen balancing on one leg; the alternate reading was spotty or speckled plumage.

A very round shorebird stands on one leg on a wet sand beach as a small wave rolls in behind.

A flock of 12 Sanderling sleeping at the sea shore. The birds are in a loose line, two-three birds deep along the centre of the shot. They are mostly facing left with their heads tucked in under their wings. They have grey heads and backs with more white coming though around the head. The wing tips and tail feathers turn towards black. Their breast and underbelly’s are pure white and they are all standing on one black leg. The birds are standing on a beach shining from the damp of a retreating tide. A large clump of brown-green seaweed is in the centre foreground. Behind the birds and two the right are two more clumps of seaweed: the smaller is more central. The background is of the sea, which has three very small waves

Red-bellied woodpecker clinging to the lichen-covered bark of a tree branch, seen in profile and facing up and to the left. The head is pale cream with a bright orange-red cap running from the forehead over the crown to the nape, a dark eye, and a long, chisel-shaped dark bill. The back and wings have a bold black-and-white zebra pattern, and the black tail has pale barring along its edge. The breast and belly are a soft, creamy buff. The blurred background is pale gray and white.

Two Common Mynas are captured mid-air in a dramatic, action-packed clash against a soft, golden-green blurred background. The upper bird hovers aggressively directly over the other, fully spreading its broad wings to reveal white patches under dark-tipped feathers, with its bright yellow beak and yellow eye patch glaring downward and its talons outstretched. Below it, the second myna tumbles backward in mid-flight with its dark wings spread wide, its yellow legs thrust upward as if fending off the attack. Warm golden sunlight illuminates their brown and black plumage, accentuating the sharp detail of their feathers and intense mid-air collision.

The bird has predominantly white feathers on its head, chest, and underparts, accented by dark brown speckles and bars across its back, tail, and upper wings. It stands on its bright yellow talons with its wings fully extended horizontally, showcasing the intricate pattern of its flight feathers.

a sparrowhawk is stood on top of a metal pole that should hold an umbrella side-on to the camera. One foot is planted on the pole, the other is raised and pointing forwards as its yellow eye gazes forwards. In the background pink flowers provide a garland in soft focus beneath the birds whilst a green hedge forms the main backdrop
