Aleksandar Vucic conceded defeat after the student-led Student List was projected to win a parliamentary majority, with Vucic saying the group was expected to take between 135 and 140 of 250 seats compared with about 105 for his electoral list. The vote capped almost two years of nationwide student-led protests against perceived corruption and creeping authoritarianism, and the ruling Serbian Progressive Party had governed since 2012. Vucic told supporters, "It is clear that we have lost these elections," comments that were met with cheers, euphoria and tears at Student List headquarters, where parliamentary candidate Radomir Saicic declared students were leading in almost all polling stations. The State Election Commission reported turnout of 64.9 percent by 6pm local time, the highest since the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1992. Election observers recorded problems: the Centre for Research, Transparency and Accountability said its monitors saw pressure on voters or election workers at almost a third of 500 polling stations, and CeSID logged about 260 reports of potential irregularities including ballot photography and identification difficulties. Celebrations and large street gatherings erupted across Belgrade after Vucic's announcement, with tents set up by his loyalists in a central park being dismantled. The projected result would end the SNS's uninterrupted rule since 2012 and hands a parliamentary majority to the Student List, setting the stage for a transition of power.
