Storm Boelo leaves thousands without power and forces evacuations in UK and Ireland

newsOct 25, 202635585

Storm Boelo battered parts of the UK and Ireland with gale-force gusts, a peak 84 mph wind was recorded at Capel Curig in Conwy county and other monitoring reported gusts up to 82 mph, bringing heavy rain, coastal and river flooding, fallen trees, and widespread power cuts. BBC reporting says 555 homes in Rhayader, Powys, and about 100 homes across south Wales lost power on Sunday morning while SP Energy was handling 14 separate outages in north and mid Wales; another outlet said thousands were without power in the North West and 400 people were evacuated from a caravan park in Preston. Flood warnings were in place, including four for the River Ely, and Transport for Wales substituted buses for several train services because lines were blocked or flooded between Cardiff Central, Bridgend and Maesteg. Ferry operators cancelled Holyhead, Dublin sailings and the Pembroke, Rosslare crossing had cancellations, and police warned drivers about debris and fallen trees on the A470 in Conwy county. The National Grid said engineers were working to restore supplies as quickly as possible and emergency services and councils continued clear-up and safety operations across affected areas.

Friends! Firstly, if you live in the UK, don’t forget your clocks should have gone back! 🕰️ Secondly, we hope you are all safe from #StormBoelo It has made Percy very skittish indeed! He’s obsessed with the noise of the rain on the skylight. Mum struggled to keep up with him as she was filming! 😹

Percy seems to have ants in his pants with the noise of the rain he doesn’t know what to get up to next 🤣 Have a good day everyone and stay cosy 💕

JanOMalley310

I had to watch it twice to catch that death-defying, record breaking leap near the end! What a silly nervous boy is Percy. But still very cute while being crazed by rain. My cat gets nervous from the patter of rain too. Too bad they don’t make tiny ear muffs for cats! 🌧️🙀🐈‍⬛🥰

Andrene@phytobelief6

I'm not in a cosy house! I'm a big wild cat roaming the deep forests, hunting for prey!

Judith Beilby6

Wow Percy has had his batteries re-charged. That or he's training for the cat olympics. Stand back woosh there he goes again 😹😹😹

BronxInOhio5

Percy is very jumpy. It’s a good thing all of you stayed out of his way. I’m happy to hear you are all safe and dry.

Mipotori5

Percy was flying! His action is so fast😲I know you all animals are sometimes skittish when the weather isn’t normal. Calm down, Percy🤎Be careful of Storm Boelo. Stay safe!

It's been a while since I've seen the Clyde quite this rough within Glasgow itself. #glasgow #glasgowtoday #theclyde #stormboelo

In what I've been assured is not symbolic of anything, Storm Boelo has torn a number of flags clean off the lamp posts

Storm Boelo may have been battering the country, but it was Beoga lifting the roof in @dolanslimerick.bsky.social last night. The support, solidarity and admiration in that room last night was a joy to experience. One of those gigs. #Beoga, bualadh bos. #speirgorm

Here's the data for Millport on the mouth of the Clyde. Skew surge last night (excess over predicted tide) of around 1.9m. The wind at that time was averaging 45-50mph, funnelling up from the southwest. #StormBoelo

Tide observations for Millport at the mouth of the Clyde. Water level peaked roughly 1.9m above the predicted astronomical high tide, and about 1m above the annual return period.

Fascinating thread here for tide nerds, of whom I am proud (all right, slightly embarassed) to be one.

Good morning, Jan @janjonesauthor.bsky.social & thank you. As you say, I think we all benefit from a metaphorical "anchor" in our lives! With #StormBoelo in the news today, maybe "Rough Seas, Dorset Coast" by John Cooper from 1934 might be appropriate! It depicts a scene at Lyme Regis. #JohnCooper

Intimidating weather. Ran 11K, although I’d been hoping to go further. Just too tired. Some big branches had been brought down by Storm Boelo but no entire trees. Highlight: a huge heron defying the winds to sail gracefully overhead. #Running #UKRunChat #StormBoelo
