B.C. Conservatives win majority; Lorne Doerksen to be premier

CBC projects the B.C. Conservatives have toppled the incumbent NDP to win a majority government and Lorne Doerkson is the incoming premier. The Conservative victory is the party’s first provincial government in British Columbia since 1928; the party coalesced quickly after Kerry-Lynne Findlay resigned five weeks ago and installed Doerkson, who had been vacationing in Africa, as interim leader. Conservatives pivoted their campaign to the economy and used former B.C. Liberal organizers as campaign managers, a strategy credited with delivering the majority. Six members of the NDP cabinet are projected to have lost their seats, with two cabinet races still unprojected and 15 former cabinet ministers retaining seats. Premier David Eby has resigned as leader of the B.C. NDP but is projected to keep his Vancouver-Point Grey seat for a fourth term. The Green Party won two seats; leader Emily Lowan said her small caucus will hold the incoming Conservative government accountable.

If the B.C. election result stings for you tonight, remember that this province once forced a majority government to back down on a tax it had just brought in. A new government still answers to the same people who hired it.

election snapped back

What just happened in B.C.? A massive political miscalculation built
on one defining characteristic of Canadian identity.

The left-leaning NDP party in B.C. were the government. They had a
majority, barely. They had two years left in their mandate. And their
leader, Premier David Eby, saw the opposition, the Conservatives,
in disarray. They'd lost their leader two days before, after 13 MLAs
left or got pushed out. They'd had four leaders in two years.
