About 200 firefighters fought a blaze that engulfed the Kehlsteinhaus, Adolf Hitler’s former Eagle’s Nest retreat on Obersalzberg in Bavaria. German police said they detained a suspicious person at the scene and reported no injuries. Authorities were alerted after a smoke detector triggered a fire alarm at about 21:50 local time, 19:50 GMT, on Friday evening. Firefighters found the building "completely ablaze" and struggled to fight the fire because the site sits at an altitude of 1,834 metres and required heavy breathing apparatus, police spokesperson Lisa Maier said. German media reported investigators suspected arson, and police said they would hold a news conference later on Saturday. The Kehlsteinhaus, built between 1937 and 1938 and home to an exhibition and a restaurant since 1952, survived the second world war undamaged before this incident.
