Bird of the Day, theme 'Juveniles'

natureOct 23, 20261183,097

Bird of the Day is running the theme #Juveniles, requesting images of young birds. The gallery today features fledglings and chicks such as a young Robin being fed by a parent, a juvenile Eurasian Blue Tit feeding on poppy seeds, and four juvenile Peregrine Falcons loafing on the spire of Our Ladye Star of the Sea in Greenwich. Other posts show swans with cygnets, ducklings on a lily pad, a juvenile Arctic Tern from Inner Farne Island, and little terns and waders in nest or feeding scenes. Use the hashtag #Juveniles to view or join the collection.

A Juvenile European Robin perched on a small, mossy log on the forest floor. The bird is slightly left of centre of frame, in side profile looking right so that its right side is visible. Its head is slightly tilted towards the camera. The bird has the characteristic shape of a Robin; round body, thin legs and upright posture but lacks the iconic oragne-red breast. It is covered in a speckled, mottled golden brown all over; sightly darker brown on back and wings. A single downy feather can be seen at the back of the head. It is standing on a small, mossy log that travels along the bottom of the frame from the left hand corner and ending in an old cut end before reaching the right corner. The background is out of focus green from the forest floor; the stems and leaves of brambles can be seen in places.

Two sandhill cranes stand in shallow blue wetland water, both facing right. The adult bird on the left is slightly larger, with a long neck, gray body, and reddish-brown feathering across its back and wings. It has a bright red crown on top of its head and dark legs stepping through the water. The younger crane on the right is smaller and leaner, with softer mottled plumage in gray, tan, and reddish-brown tones. Its neck is extended forward, and its wings and back show warm rusty coloring mixed with gray. Both birds are reflected in the still water, with blurred reeds and marsh plants in the background.

Two baby Killdeers standing in a green field of short green leaves. The one on the left is closer to the camera and in focus, the one on the right is further back and blurred but identifiable. Their legs are too long for their little puffball bodies.

Profile shot of an Orange-footed Scrubfowl standing on a leaf-littered forest floor. The bird has a slate-grey body, rich reddish-brown upper wing plumage, a small crest on its head, and bright orange-red legs and feet. Green bamboo stalks stand in the softly blurred background

Rock pigeon in flight over green, rippled water, shown in profile and flying to the left with its wings swept sharply downward. The head and body are dark slate gray, with a pale-ringed yellow-orange eye and a short, pinkish bill. The upperwing coverts are dark gray with pale scalloped edges, and the flight feathers are white along the outer edge of the wing and at the trailing edge. The gray tail has a pale border, and a hint of red legs shows tucked beneath. The water behind is a soft, blurred green.

A Laughing Kookaburra faces right, sitting on the top part of an outdoor chair. In the background are various kinds of green foliage plants, and one plant with yellow flowers just to the right of the Kookaburra. Some brown pavers can also be seen in the background. The Laughing Kookaburra is a bird in the kingfisher subfamily Halcyoninae. It is a large kingfisher with a whitish head and a brown eye-stripe. The upperparts are mostly dark brown but there is a mottled light-blue patch on the wing coverts. The underparts are cream-white and the tail is barred with rufous and black. The plumage of the male and female birds is similar. The territorial call is a distinctive laugh that is often delivered by several birds at the same time, mostly before dawn, or in the early morning, and late afternoon.

A plump Eurasian Wren perched on a reddish, thorny bramble branch against a soft green out-of-focus background. The tiny brown bird has a stubby, cocked tail, a faint pale supercilium over its dark eye, and a fine, sharp beak. Text on card (not pictured): One of the most widespread and numerous birds in Europe, found from Iceland and the British Isles east across the Palearctic to Japan, inhabiting woodland, hedgerows, gardens, moorland, and rocky stream banks. A tiny, rotund bird with a short, upturned tail; despite its diminutive size it delivers an astonishingly loud, rich, and rapid song. 📷: Photo by TheOtherKev via Pixabay https://pixabay.com/photos/wren-bird-animal-eurasian-wren-6986131/
