Justice Dept opens criminal probe into Corey Lewandowski over DHS contracts

The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into Corey Lewandowski over allegations he profited from his role as a top aide at the Department of Homeland Security and helped steer roughly $220 million in advertising contracts that were awarded without standard competitive bidding, three US officials and a fourth person told Reuters. The probe began after a criminal referral from the DHS inspector general, which has been examining Lewandowski’s handling of certain government contracts. Lewandowski served as a top aide to former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and had authority as a special government employee despite questions about the legality of that status. Officials told Reuters that Lewandowski signed some DHS contracts and directed holds on certain grants and contracts, including ones involving FEMA. Lewandowski’s lawyer has denied wrongdoing and did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and the Justice Department has not yet issued subpoenas or other legal demands in the criminal investigation. Former President Donald Trump commented that he wants his people to be honest and said the DOJ should act if they are not. The inquiry is notable because investigations of people close to Trump have been rare under his administration, and it follows Noem’s March firing amid controversies that included scrutiny of the advertising contract.
