For the first time since it was made nearly 1,000 years ago the Bayeux Tapestry has returned to England and the British Museum released batches of tickets for January and March 2027 today at 10am GMT. A visitor, Helen Jeffries, described entering via the museum’s Great Russell Street main entrance, passing airport-style security and a quieter timed-entry queue system that asked people to join only within five minutes of their slot. The exhibition space includes display cases of 11th-century weapons and large photographic banners about Hastings; Jeffries noted the visit fell close to the 960th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, fought on 14 October 1066. Jeffries warned the visit involves a lot of standing and said the audio guide was malfunctioning during her 18.10 slot, offering practical tips for autistic visitors such as knowing toilet locations and using the faster security queue for ticket holders. Demand for tickets appears intense, with multiple social posts reporting very large virtual queue positions, for example 121,657 and 158,938 people ahead in ticket queues. The British Museum is releasing further ticket batches and public booking windows continue to open, so more timed slots are expected to be made available in coming weeks.
