Trump floats replacing White House briefing room with indoor pool

journalismOct 20, 202631297

The New York Times reports President Trump has proposed evicting the White House press corps by tearing out the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room and restoring an indoor swimming pool beneath it. Trump posted a late-night message that included side-by-side images showing the current press briefing room next to an ornate rendering of a restored pool. The White House did have an indoor pool opened on June 2, 1933, installed during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency and later covered to create the press room. The proposal would displace the press corps from the briefing room’s current location and revive a feature that has historical precedent beneath the room. The post and the proposal have prompted immediate public commentary and reporting that emphasize both the symbolic and practical implications of removing the press from that space.
