Trump to close East Potomac Golf Links for 15 months amid court fight

newsOct 18, 2026335,201

President Donald Trump announced the East Potomac Golf Course will close beginning Nov. 15 for about 15 months for a redevelopment he called “one of the Best and Most Spectacular Golf Courses anywhere,” even as a federal judge has ordered a halt to the project until at least Oct. 26. U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes scheduled a hearing in the case for Monday after accusing the administration of duping her in order to clear trees; crews have already cut sections of trees on the property and court filings and reporting say more than 400 trees were removed. Government attorneys have told the court the president’s broader redevelopment is nascent, yet the White House says work will start on the announced schedule. The Justice Department has asked to remove Judge Reyes from the case, accusing her of ‘‘egregious’’ behavior. Plaintiffs and some local advocates say the redesign will eliminate public amenities including picnic areas, bike lanes, and playgrounds, while the administration emphasizes repairs such as to the course seawall. The dispute now centers on whether construction can proceed while litigation continues and on the upcoming court hearing that could change the project’s legal constraints.

As inflation hits a 4-month high and the Iran war keeps driving up gas prices, Trump unveils his big plan with the midterms two weeks away: a "World Class Championship Golf Course" in D.C. Work starts Nov. 15, closing a public course for about 15 months, he says.

Just in case you were worried about tomorrow’s hearing before Judge Reyes in the East Potomac Golf Links case being uninteresting, President Trump has decided to … prove the plaintiffs’ claims about why the trees are being removed?

Truth Social post from President Trump:

“Doug Burgum, and the United States Department of the Interior, is very excited about the new Development of a Great Golf Course at the site of the old East Potomac Golf Links. We would like to thank Tom Fazio for his initial conceptual design and ideas, coupled with those of others from within the Golf World and the Department of the Interior. Any variance or changes will be made, depending on site conditions, by the Experts in Parks and Recreation, whose experience and knowledge in Seawalls, Landscaping, and Design are second to none. President DONALD J. TRUMP”

The map posted by Trump this morning versus the blurred image on his desk in Katie Zacharia's post. (The White House responded to questions about whether the blurred image was a map of East Potomac by spewing invective.)
