Bird of the Day, theme 'Larus'

natureOct 18, 2026611,012

Today's Bird of the Day is the theme Larus, any gull species, with an alternate theme of Turdidae, any thrush species. The gallery focuses on seabirds and shore scenes as well as garden thrushes, with many flight, feeding, and non-breeding plumage shots. Look for a European Herring Gull taking off with a starfish, a Pacific Gull holding a freshly caught crab, and an Audouin's Gull photographed at Santa Pola alongside thrush entries like a Song Thrush and an American Robin. Tag your post with #Larus or the alt #Turdidae to join in.

A European Herring Gull taking off from the sea with a starfish in its bill. The bird is taking up the left of the shot taking off from the water travelling to the right. Its pink legs are trailing underneath it and the toes are still submerged. The right side of its body can be seen; its underside is pure white and its head is white with a lot of grey speckling throughout. Its wings are both upward, the nearer can be seen from underneath and the further from the top. The wings are silver grey and white at the ends of each feather and at the top edge of the wing. The wing tips are black with white at the edges here too. The bird is carrying a yellow starfish in its yellow bill, holding it by one arm so that the rest of the starfish is hanging underneath. The left arm is obscuring the gulls eye and some of its face. There are water drops falling from the Starfish and gulls body and some splashes underneath. The light is dull and the rest of the shot is of the calm sea, which has a silvery effect from the light.

Portrait-oriented, 4:5 image. A large gull with a yellow bill, white plumage, and pale grey wings, which are folded up against its body. The black tips of its wings are just showing. The bird is standing with its back to the camera on the stone ramparts of a castle. Its head is turned to the left hand side of the frame and seen in profile. It is brightly lit by the sun. The background, not in focus, comprises more stone walls and a dark, vertical window opening.

A young Western Gull with mottled grey feathers and pink feet is standing on a rocky shoreline facing the camera. Its head is turned at about a 45 degree angle and its bill is wide open in a yawn. The inside of its mouth matches the pink of its feet. The rock it is standing on and the rocks behind it are encrusted with calcified sea life as they are underwater when the tide is high. In the distant background the marine blue of the Pacific Ocean is visible.

such a beautiful silvery bird - quite a chunk! It is bigger than a Song Thrush and has silvery grey plumage on its head and back with a hint of golden brown on its throat. Its flanks have large dark grey arrowheads running down to its tail and smaller speckles under its beak and down the top of its breast with a shiny, almost white breast. It is perched on top of an upright stem with buds set against a bright blue sky

An American robin standing on bare, leaf-littered ground at the edge of grass, facing right in near-profile. Its head is dark charcoal with broken white eye arcs and a white throat streaked in black, and its bill is yellow. The breast is rusty orange with irregular pale blotches, a patchy look typical of a young robin molting into its first-year plumage. Gray-brown wings with pale-edged feathers and a long dark tail angle back to the left. Soft, out-of-focus green grass and dry brown leaves fill the background.

A crisp, close-up photograph captures two silver gulls standing on a sandy shore under warm, low-angled light. The gull in the foreground is in sharp focus, captured in profile facing right, stepping forward on its vibrant coral-red legs and webbed feet. Its sleek white head and breast transition into a smooth, pale grey back and wings, ending in black tail feathers patterned with distinct white spots. It features a bright red bill and a striking, pale yellow eye with a thin red ring. Behind it and slightly out of focus, the second gull stands further back on the dark, damp sand facing left, mirroring the pale grey and white coloration. The background shows the soft, muted blue of a calm shoreline fading into the distance, highlighting the clean details and rich textures of the birds' plumage.
