Officials told ABC News that some post-May U.S. airstrikes are now being labeled as "overseas operations," a vague designation that would be unconventional for a war and could change how casualties are counted after Operation Epic Fury was declared ended in May. Lawmakers pushed back, saying the administration may be rebranding the campaign to skirt the 60-day limit on military action without congressional authorization. Alex Wagner, who served as assistant secretary of the Air Force for manpower and reserve affairs under the Biden administration, said accurate casualty reporting is the clearest link most Americans have to the true cost of war. The discrepancy has prompted fresh questions about whether the Pentagon’s underlying systems for tracking casualties across military operations remain reliable and what that means for congressional oversight and public transparency.
