Isabella Weber profile, economist advocates price-stabilizing policies

Isabella Weber, 38, an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an associate at Harvard’s Fairbank Center, tells the Guardian she wants to "abandon ideology" and build a "big tent economic policy" to counter a rising far right by making life’s necessities affordable. Weber popularised the term "greedflation" to describe profiteering during cost-of-living crises and argues that extreme inequality, corporate concentration and climate-driven windfall profits are eroding democracy. Her new book, Anti-Fascist Economics, distills years of research into inequality and inflation and recommends reclaiming essentials such as housing, transport, food, water, energy and healthcare for the public good. In a 2024 Ellen Meiksins Wood lecture she argued for emergency price caps to prevent price explosions in essentials when supply cannot be quickly adjusted. Weber advises policymakers in the US, Europe and Latin America, and the Guardian reports progressive politicians are already heeding her proposals.
