Bird of the Day, theme 'Shore Birds'

natureOct 14, 20261062,905

Bird of the Day is a daily community event with today's theme #ShoreBirds and an alternate theme #UrbanBirds, inviting photos and sightings of birds on shorelines or in urban settings. Contributions today show shorebirds and coastal scenes, plus urban-adapted species, ranging from small waders to large herons. Examples in the gallery include two Bar-tailed Godwits with a flock of Dunlin on the sea shore, six Sanderling on the Lake Huron shoreline at Southampton, Ontario, and a Ringed Plover photographed on the Isles of Scilly. Other notable entries feature a Surfbird on a rocky Pacific shore, a Long-billed Curlew at Green-Gold Ecolodge in Costa Rica, and a Great Blue Heron at sunset on Redington Shores beach.

🪶 Good Morning! I’m covering for Helen today Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #ShoreBirds; any bird on the shore Alt. is #UrbanBirds; any bird in an Urban setting - 2 Bar-tailed Godwits & a flock of Dunlin on the sea shore #ECK #birdphotography #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #WaderWednesday

Two Bar-tailed Godwits standing at the waters edge in front of a flock of sleeping Dunlin. The Godwit’s are centre of frame, both is side profile facing left is that their left sides are showing. The one to the right of centre has its head facing forwards and the one on the left (and slightly behind)has its head tucked under its wing. They have long black legs and a long, dark bill, lighter towards the head. The head is a grey brown with a lighter eyebrow stripe, the upper plumage is grey-brown with light streaks throughout. The breast is whitish, mottled with grey-brown. The rump is white with bars on it and the underbelly is white. In front of the Godwits is a flock of approximately 80 sleeping Dunlin, slightly out of focus. They run from left to right about five birds deep. They have mousey grey brown upperparts and white underparts. They have shorter, black legs and all have their heads tucked into their wings. In the foreground centre is a large, out of focus, clump of brown seaweed. The Dunlin are standing on the sand and other clumps of seaweed are strewn behind them at the waters edge. The Godwits are standing in the water at the edge and behind them the tide is pulling out, leaving shallow water. A small breaking wave can be seen running along the top of the frame.

Great shots and themes, AB! Thanks for covering Helen’s day 🙏😊

Neil Cameron2

Love when you get a range of shorebirds like that. If only because it gives such fantastic scale as to the size differences that aren't otherwise obvious. Nicely done, shot, AB.

Kokopelli Design2

Perfect! Need to sketch out some shorebirds and share. Hopefully that works out today on my long workday.

Atlantic Birding's pretending to be Helen's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #ShoreBirds Today's artistic contribution is titled: "Silver Gull on Rocky Shore with Attitude!" #ECK #birds #birdphotography #birdsofbluesky #wildlife #nature #Photography #Nikon #PhotographersUnited #PhotographersOfBlueSky

A Silver Gull (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae) poses in profile on the rocky shore against the sunlit sparkling breaking waves. The bird's red bill and legs, and white eye are particularly striking features. The image was taken at Wellington Point on Moreton Bay in Brisbane, Australia.

The #BirdOfTheDay alt. theme for today is #UrbanBirds #nature #wildlife #photography #birds I took this picture yesterday by the river Roding in the London Borough of Redbridge. I reckon that makes this an urban bird

A Surfbird on the rocky shore of the mighty Pacific Ocean. #ShoreBirds #BirdOfTheDay #Birds #ECK

Surfbird. A medium-sized shore bird with yellow legs, a mostly grey body, and a white + grey speckled belly. Its bill is short for a shore bird, yellow at the mandibular base but otherwise black. It is standing on a wet dark grey rock that is encrusted with sea life including small sea anemones and barnacle like calcifications. Behind it is the rough surf and more encrusted rocks.

Helen’s #BirdOfTheDay theme today via Atlantic Birding is: #ShoreBirds; any bird on the shore Alt. is #UrbanBirds; any bird in an Urban setting For the main theme, I’ve chosen a Common Sandpiper, which realises I’ve just taken its photograph 🙂

A Common Sandpiper wades through the water along the shore while looking at the camera. It has a brown grey back and wings with white mottled markings, a medium long bill and a white eye stripe. Its legs are dark.

Helen's #BirdOfTheDay theme (via AB) is #ShoreBirds, with an alt' theme of #UrbanBirds. I'm going with my husband's lovely #Oystercatcher photo from the west coast of Scotland, and of course my #Pigeons in the middle of town. #WaderWednesday #PigeonSky #Birds
