Netflix released the first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew on Oct. 13, scoring the footage to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” The trailer opens with Daniel Craig’s Andrew Ketterley giving young Digory and Polly a magical ring that sends them to fantastical lands and teases Emma Mackey’s Jadis, flying horse Fledge, and Meryl Streep as the voice of Aslan. Gerwig premiered footage at a Netflix press preview at New York’s AMC Lincoln Square and discussed the film in an interview with Stephen Colbert, saying she was determined to make the movie for the big screen. The Magician’s Nephew is Gerwig’s first feature since Barbie and will open in theaters, including IMAX, on Feb. 12, 2027 before arriving on Netflix on April 2, 2027. Gerwig recalled pitching the project to Netflix chief Ted Sarandos after the streamer acquired the Narnia rights and said she and casting teams chose leads David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell after months of auditions.

It'll be funny if my least-favorite Narnia book turns into my favorite big-screen Narnia adaptation (and maybe even my favorite overall, passing the BBC Tom Baker adaptation of Silver Chair). But, after all, it's Greta Gerwig. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDJ-...

I would probably in general be against adaptations in the spirit of "what if we took this thing and instead of just adapting it, we made it awesome?" In general, that means you're too afraid of the source material to be right person to adapt it. Just go make your own original movie. But...

Funny...I just recalled that it is my favorite. At least the one I re-read the most when I was a kid. Loved the world-building and framing device of the Woods Between the Worlds.

You put it below The Last Battle?

Man I hope Tom Baker holds on long enough & in good enough health to do a cameo if this Netflix series works. Loved his Puddleglum

Man, I love Gerwig and all, but I am solidly in the camp that thinks the chronological reordering of the series was a serious mistake. Magician’s Nephew works best as a reveal/origin story AFTER you’ve already been introduced to the world via the Wardrobe.

Magician's Nephew was probably my favorite book in the series, so I'm just happy it's finally being realized in some way and we're not getting the 1000th adaptation of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

On Tuesday morning, I took a Stairway to Heaven for a little Q+A with Greta Gerwig and Stephen Colbert about the big Narnia movie. Here are my takeaways. sojo.net/articles/cul...

It would seems she understood that first and foremost the fantasy should be FUN.

I don't know if it'll be good, but Greta Gerwig's Magician's Nephew looks like "Painting on the Side of a Van: The Movie," and I'm here for it.

As Gerwig's The Magician's Nephew is set in the 1950s rather than the 1900s, it means The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe will need to be set in the 1990s. Instead of the children escaping the Blitz, I posit that they're attending Oasis's legendary Knebworth gig instead

Magician’s Nephew trailer is giving me the same “whimsy overload” reaction I had to the most recent Wrinkle in Time movie BUT. But but but. There are a few shots where I’m like “oh that’s rad” I will trust 🙏 I want to trust

I rank "The Magician's Nephew" as easily the second best Narnia book (behind "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe") and from the looks of things so far, this adaptation seems on point. Looking forward to Greta Gerwig putting her take on it.

Here’s the thing- I LOVED the Narnia books. First series I read multiple times, and the main reason I hated HP as a kid is because I knew Narnia was better. So am I excited for the Gerwig film? ABSO-FUCKIN-LUTELY. m.youtube.com/watch?v=gDJ-...

Just did the mental math on what it would mean for The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe if Magician's Nephew is now set during the 1950s bridge between WWII and the Mod era and... is she planning on setting LW&W during COVID??? (Because you've GOT to have kids sent away to the country as the plot!)

That's *totally* the wrong period for "The Magician's Nephew"! (The novel is set circa 1900; that car is 1930s or later. Ditto Jadis' frock.)

It's been 25 years since I read "The Magician's Nephew". That period of time seemed to melt away as I recognized almost every shot to a corresponding reference in the book.
