Thirty years after Tupac Shakur was shot in Las Vegas, Duane "Keffe D" Davis was sentenced Tuesday to 40 years to life for orchestrating the 1996 killing. Clark County District Court Judge Carli Kierny delivered the sentence and said, "You don’t get to take a man from his family ... and just walk away from it." Davis, 63, was convicted on August 31 of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon and received 731 days of credit for time already served. Prosecutors relied heavily on Davis’s own statements in police interviews and a 2019 memoir in which he wrote, "I know the real f**king story," ruling those statements admissible after he breached a proffer agreement. The prosecution said Davis, as a former leader of the Southside Compton Crips, orchestrated the shooting in retaliation for a scuffle between Tupac’s entourage and Davis’s nephew Orlando Anderson at the MGM Grand; Tupac was shot while riding in a car with Marion "Suge" Knight and died six days later. Davis remains the only person ever charged in Shakur’s death, closing a long-unsolved case that had persisted for nearly three decades.
