Bird of the Day, theme 'Looking Down'

natureOct 13, 20261313,692

Bird of the Day is a daily community event; today's theme is #LookingDown, with the alternate theme #LookingUp. Contributors shared closeups and action shots of birds with heads lowered and raised, from garden songbirds to coastal seabirds and hunting raptors. Standout entries include a Long-Tailed Tit looking down, a closeup of a Red Kite passing overhead, and two Bohemian Waxwings braving minus 30 degrees in Saskatchewan. Look for kingfishers perched with halo-like bokeh, razorbills scouting landing spots at Bempton Cliffs, and a great egret clutching a tiny fish.

🪶 Good Morning and Happy Tuesday Everyone! Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #LookingDown; any bird looking down/head lowered Alt. is #LookingUp; any bird looking up/head raised - A Long-Tailed Tit looking down (on me) #ECK #birdphotography #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #ColorADay #BlueTue

A Long Tailed Tit, taken from below, on the end of a small branch against a clear blue sky. The bird is left of centre of frame and facing the camera so that its underside, chest and head are visible. Its head is cocked to the left so that the right side is prominent.
The bird has a short, black beak, it has a white streak from the top of its beak to the back of its head, which is ruffled from the wind at the back. The sides of its head are black and its chin and throat are white with a line of grey-black along the chest. The rest of its underside are white, its black feet and claws can
Be seen wrapped around the branch at the top. The tail is hidden behind the branch it is perched on, which comes up form the bottom of the shot and is short with flaky white lichen in clumps halfway up, with a hit of yellow too.
There is another branch in the foreground, running along the length of the right side of the shot. It is small and dead and covered in white and yellow lichen. The strands of the top of a spiders web can be seen between the two branches, mostly out of focus. The rest of the shot is a clear blue sky.

Good morning AB. A delightful picture of a tiny bird that doesn't often get a chance to look down on others. (I know the feeling.)

Barrie Cull2

Lovely photo AB 👏 I do love the way birds look at us enquiringly when they see us, as if to say ‘Who are you?’ 😄

Atlantic Birding’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #LookingDown; any bird looking down/head lowered. Here's a herring gull, performing aerial surveillance of a Rhode Island beach for anything edible. 📷 #CanonR7 #Tamron18-300 #photography #birdphoto #wildlife #ECK #gulls #HerringGull

Herring gull in flight with its wings outstretched and raised, seen from a left rear quartering view. The gray top of the right wing is clearly visible, while the left is edge-on to the camera. The bird's white body is on full display, and its head--white with some gray mottling-- is pointed down and turned to the left, searching the ground for anything it might want to eat. The background is a gray and green blur with a few orange and red highlights, a beach and forest.

Although it looks as if this egret is looking to the sky, it was walking around seeking a good fishing spot. It stretched out its neck and would turn its head to look around until if found a good location. For the #birdoftheday theme of #lookingup #birds #heron #egret #protectnature #EastCoastKin

An egret lifts its head and stretches out its neck. While it appears to be looking up, it was hunting for fish by walking around like this until it found a good fishing spot

Telephoto shot of a male boat-tailed grackle perched upright on a thick, bare grey-brown tree snag. Facing toward his right, he has his head tilted distinctly upward, showcasing a striking, bright pale yellow eye against a sleek black head. His neck and chest plumage are heavily ruffed and puffed out, catching a subtle iridescent violet sheen under the light. His long, black tail feathers extend straight downward below the perch. The background is a slightly clouded, pale blue sky that cleanly isolates his dramatic posture.
