Epic delays its Marvel and Star Wars shooter, pivots to AI-first development

Epic Games has delayed an unannounced Marvel and Star Wars crossover shooter that had been scheduled for March 2027, telling the development team last week to adopt an "AI first" production model, Bloomberg reported. Internal instructions ordered teams to implement AI-driven workflows using tools such as Anthropic's Claude and to generate art with "full AI workflows." One director told staff there would be "no more hand-written code," according to Bloomberg. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney posted his own thoughts publicly after the report. The company laid off more than 1,000 employees in March, a move Bloomberg linked to falling console sales, ongoing legal disputes with Apple and Google, and difficulty maintaining consistent Fortnite seasons. The project is now delayed indefinitely while Epic retools development around AI-driven assets and code generation.

This industry is falling apart We have mass layoffs causing talented people to leave the industry, then we have stuff like this which will cause talented people to leave the industry It absolutely sucks and I hate to see it. AI code is bloated, messy and buggy. These games will suck.

Serious question, I was planning to delve into 3D for my next game, and I was considering investigating Unreal Engine and Godot (Unfortunately Unity already shat the bed so that wasn't an option). Are there other viable professional 3D engines for small indie games, or is it just Godot now?

The thing that's going to be hardest about this is raising the next generation of kids to not get sucked into this slop by the marketing just kind of innately working on their dumbest peers and kids not really having any particular reason of their own to resist the resultant ambient peer pressure
