Tom Cruise film Digger forecast to be a major box-office flop
Very glad I caught Digger on the big screen - every frame is exquisitely shot and there are key little details throughout. It’s a hard film to describe which may be why it hasn’t worked at the box office but I’d recommend it - it’s dark, satirical, challenging, intriguing and mordantly funny.
That cat! The inside lining of the VP's jacket! All the leaks! TOM BELL! 🏆✨
Thanks. Still hoping to get to see it before it disappears.
Possibly because the trailers tell you absolutely nothing about it. I've seen several on TV, SM and at the cinema but still have no clue what the film is. They very much make it to be a Tom Cruise film and I don't particularly like Tom Cruise
Now self-interrogating why I didn't like Don't Look Up, a film about climate change that only made me laugh twice, but I really liked Digger, a film about climate change that only made me laugh twice.
A theory - Digger sounds at least partially gonzo; Don't Look Up became Bobby Bittman saying "as a comic in all seriousness" and it got old.
Is it because David Sirota is very annoying and thin skinned?
Two laughs a huge step up for Iñárritu, two laughs a huge step down for McKay
Because the heavy-handed underwritten satire (with input from the cast, no less) is the entirely of Don't Look Up, whereas Digger gets as far as Don't Look Up does before it's really even got to the interesting part. And doesn't have Di Caprio sticking his oar in.
Both raise the question "why should you as an audience member care about anything that happens in this movie", but only one gives an answer. The other one forgets to tell a story so it can indulge in millenarian end-of-the-world-happening-all-at-once spectacle.
Digger's ambitious and it's not afraid of the grotesque or the ridiculous. I suspect it'll age well and future generations will approach it as a climate crisis Strangelove.
Digger feels like a blend of a Wes Anderson film, a Charlie Kaufman film, and an Alfonso Cuarón film (extremely laudatory)
Yes! Adaptation to a lesser degree, but Synecdoche especially. The recipe for Digger is basically: Asteroid City + Synecdoche, New York + Children of Men + a soupçon of Burn After Reading bsky.app/profile/saty...
It reminded me a lot of Synecdoche, New York, which is high praise because that’s my favourite film of all time
Do my followers have Digger opinions? I’m seeing everything from “triumph we’ll forget bombed in five years” to “the death of cinema.”
Filmsky consensus for Digger (2026).
i think it's very fitting as the last film to ever be released by warner bros. it is and contains within it a literal swan song for an old, dying world.
Extremely well done comedy and thoughtful comedy by two men trying to prove they are still auteurs, especially after one of them was told insurance would no longer cover him jumping out of airplanes" was my take. And that does mean I liked it.
It's fine. I think he's great but not his best role. It was just nice seeing he can still do it and I hope he doesn't go back to action figure Tom. I suspect this will be a cult classic after some time too. I found the twist a welcome surprise because it explains why the movie looks like shit.
I liked it a lot and also think it’s kind of bad, but almost intentionally so
Digger hates itself. Which it should 8/10
