Indigenous Peoples' Day observed as Columbus Day holiday continues

cultureOct 12, 202630580

Monday, Oct. 12 is the federal Columbus Day holiday, observed on the second Monday in October, and U.S. government offices will be closed. Pew Research Center reports that observance is inconsistent across the country as a sustained push reframes the day as Indigenous Peoples' Day and some jurisdictions and communities mark that alternative observance instead. The U.S. stock market remains open during regular hours, with the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq trading from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern. The U.S. Postal Service observes the holiday, so there will be no regular residential or business mail delivery and all USPS offices will be closed. Bank observance varies: JPMorgan Chase said branches will be open but will treat the day as a holiday for online transactions, while Wells Fargo and Bank of America will be closed. Major retailers such as Costco and Walmart are open and operating on their regular schedules.
