Shane Gillis bombs SNL monologue, slips F-bomb in Green Eggs & Ham sketch

Comedian Shane Gillis opened Saturday Night Live on Feb. 24 with a meandering, widely panned monologue that included lines such as "either you're gay or you're Hitler," and later slipped an F-bomb during the live Green Eggs and Ham sketch, briefly interrupting the sketch. Critics and viewers called the monologue unfunny and accused Gillis of leaning into misogynistic and homophobic material, including a line about women at the gym and name-dropping Joe Rogan. Gillis first gained mainstream attention when NBC announced him as a new SNL cast member in September 2019 and then fired him days later after a resurfaced podcast clip showed him using an anti-Asian slur; he has since apologized while saying he intends to keep pushing boundaries. NBC News notes Gillis has rebuilt a career outside the show with a 2021 self-released special that has more than 23 million YouTube views, a Netflix special titled "Beautiful Dogs" released last September, and a recently announced Bud Light partnership and tour. The troubled hosting night revives questions about SNL’s repeated bookings of Gillis given his 2019 firing for racist remarks and past use of homophobic language.
