Bird of the Day, theme 'Waders'

natureOct 9, 202623212,352

Bird of the Day is a daily community event; today's theme is Waders with an alternate theme of Garden Birds. Contributors posted shorebirds and marsh birds in natural settings, often at golden hour, showing silhouettes, reflections, and action shots. Standout entries include a solitary sandpiper and its reflection, a Eurasian Curlew standing at the ocean's edge, and multiple great egret photos fishing at sunrise. Look for lapwings, least sandpipers, snowy plovers, ibis fighting over a crab, and black-necked stilts among the gallery.

#Birds #Corvid Atlantic Birding @atlanticbirding.bsky.social says today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme Alt. is #GardenBirds; any bird that you might see in your garden. A Crow on foggy pre-dawn morning, 2 days ago. During the warmer months, they 'patrol' my lawns looking for garden snails & other edibles.

A very foggy pre-dawn. A crow is perched on the peak of an old birdhouse. Faintly seen in the background is a leafy tree on the left & a roofline with a chimney on the right. The crow is all black, mostly a silhouette in the dim light.

Today's #birdoftheday theme is #waders. A pretty little solitary sandpiper and its reflection. #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky

Solitary sandpier with spotted chest and wings white stomach wades in a shallow pond, its reflection and the reflections of the grasses and stones on the water's surface.

🪶 Good Morning, Happy Friday Everyone, we made it! Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #Waders; any wading bird Alt. is #GardenBirds; any bird that you might see in your garden - A Eurasian Curlew standing at the edge of the ocean #ECK #birdphotography #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #Seascape

A Eurasian Curlew standing on barnacle covered rocks at the edge of the sea. The bird is slightly right of centre of the shot, facing left so that its left side can be seen.
It has a very long, downward curved bill, which is brownish. Its plumage on top is a mottled grey-brown with dark streaking throughout, the plumage gets darker towards the back of the bird. Its underbelly is cream coloured and is also dark streaked. It has long greyish legs, which can only be seen to just below the knee in the shot.
The foreground is a dark rock which appears to be one large slab with large crack and crevasses throughout. It is curved rather than sharp, and mostly covered in a thin layer of yellowish barnacles with a few limpets here and there. The background is a calm and out of focus sea with a whitish appearance from the light

So for a two-fer I need...a wading bird in my garden? :) (Amazingly, cattle egrets have shown up in my birdbath but that probably doesn't count as they usually wade in golf courses)

Good morning AB, what a wonderful photo and great themes ✨️Have a fine day and take it easy here 🙏

Happy Friday! What a beautiful shot. I love how peaceful birds look when they’re just going about their day by the water. Photos like this make me want to slow down, enjoy the little things, and spend more time appreciating nature. Such a lovely way to start the morning!

Today's #birdoftheday theme is #waders This is probably my favorite wader photo, a great egret chasing a cattle egret with a vole. What characters they are!🪶

Great egret running, looming over a cattle egret with a vole in its beak, trying to keep his snack from getting stolen.

Well at least the vole had a fun final moments

What a shot!!! I love that, it tells such a story

WhatABeautifulWorld3

Fabulous capture! Did the Cattle Egret get to keep his catch or did the Great Egret snatch it away?

Nicole Gerlach3

I can hear the soundtrack to this picture. I feel like it has a lot of kazoos.

Cattle egret be like, "shitshitshitshitshitshitfuckshitshitshitshi—"

The tail is much too long to be a vole, thank god.

Great blue. #BirdOfTheDay #Waders #eck 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a great blue heron (Ardea herodias) perched on a moss-covered branch, its body angled away from the camera while its head turns to look right. Long, shaggy gray plumes drape down its back and chest, and warm golden light catches the cream-colored neck, white face, and dark gray stripe above the bright yellow eye. Its long, dagger-like orange bill points to the right. The background is a blur of green foliage and blue sky.
