Bird of the Day, theme 'Eating'

natureOct 8, 202622312,064

Bird of the Day is a daily community theme; today's main tag is Crooners with an alternate theme of Eating, meaning birds caught singing or holding food in their beaks. Photographers and birders posted singing subjects and feeding scenes, from close-up garden singers to wetland predators mid-capture. Standout entries show a Great Blue Heron with its latest catch, a Cedar Waxwing holding a juniper berry, and a brown pelican with a beak full of fish. Also notable are an egret shredding a crawdad and a house sparrow carrying a sunflower seed; tag to follow is #Eating.

#Birds Rob @robcrank68.bsky.social says today's #BirdOfTheDay Alt theme is #Eating, birds with food in their beaks. A Great Blue Heron with its latest catch. This bird was quite a successful fisherman, when it was snapping at dragonflies.

A dark grey coloured bird with a large pointed beak, holds a small fish in the tip. The bird's neck is bent in an S shape, its beak pointing downwards.

A green heron grabbing a small (invertebrate?) food item for the #eating theme of #BirdOfTheDay #birds #nature #photography #ECK

A small heron is perched at the edge of a floating log in a pond. The heron is crougched and has partially extended its neck and has a small item in its bill which is retracting from the water. A white goose feather is floating behind the heron. Vegetation and the heron are reflected in the pond.

Boat-tailed grackle belts (Quiscalus major) on a sandy lake shore CREW pen flint strand lake trails Bonita Springs, Florida 5-19-26 Rob’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #crooners & Alt is #Eating: birds with food in beaks, or singing. #birds #ECK #birding #threewordgenre #nature #singing #photography

Telephoto shot of a male boat-tailed grackle standing on a wet, sandy shoreline. Viewed from a three-quarter profile facing stage-right, he has his head tilted back with his long, slender black beak opened wide in a display call. His neck and chest plumage are dramatically puffed out, catching the light to reveal brilliant, iridescent dark blue and violet tones over his sleek black body. His long, fan-like black tail extends horizontally to his left. The background features the calm, rippling surface of pale water, while sparse green blades of grass sit in the foreground.

Incredible detail and great pose! I love these birds so much. They seem ungainly at times but I find them quite graceful in their precision and how they handle their giant bodies.

For today's #BirdOfTheDay Alt theme is #Eating, birds with food in their beaks. The snowies are back at it again and we're victorious . #ECK #photography #birds #SnowyEgrets #ClassicMono #BnW-Photography

Black and white Photo of 2 Snowy Egrets and the bird upfront has a small fish in its beak. The other one has not made a catch but is still stirring up the ground below the surface to shake up some food. It's witnessed by the bubbles they both make walking and stirring with their feet.

@robcrank68.bsky.social set today's #BirdOfTheDay theme, #crooners, birds singing. I love the little puff of condensation from this Dunnock's breath in the cold at dawn in my garden this morning. #Birds #Birding #ECK #LincsBirding #UKBirding #Commonbirds #LocalBirding #GardenBirding

A Dunnock, Prunella modularis, stood on a concrete fence post, beak open with a tiny patch of mist coming from its breath. I think technically it's calling rather than singing but close enough for the theme I hope.
