Arkansas campaign ad depicts white welfare recipient, conservatives criticize casting

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a campaign video promoting stricter Medicaid work requirements that depicts an unemployed, young white man identified in the ad as "Brad" as a welfare recipient. Conservative commentators including Sean Davis, co-founder of The Federalist, and commentator Matt Walsh criticized the casting choice, saying it was wrong to portray a white person in that role. Arkansas Department of Human Services data cited by the Associated Press show about 60 percent of ARHOME enrollees are white and about 18 percent are Black. A Republican consultant called the critics' complaints overtly racist. The ad’s imagery and the public push for work rules have renewed debate among Republicans about messaging and the demographics of Arkansas’s Medicaid population.
