Bird of the Day, theme 'Best Beaks'

natureOct 2, 202626615,582

Bird of the Day is a daily community event with today’s theme #BestBeaks, inviting photos of birds with striking colors, bold bill profiles, or unusual shapes. Gallery entries emphasize closeups and field shots of diverse species, from waterbirds to tropical forest birds, often highlighting colorful or sculpted bills. Standout posts include a Black Swan at Benbow Pond, a White-throated Kingfisher photographed in Thailand, and puffins from Lunga captured during May. Look for big-billed ducks like a Northern Shoveler, a long-billed curlew at Monterey Bay, and several hornbills and toucans showing dramatic bill shapes under the #BestBeaks tag.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestBeaks. This black skimmer fed in the shallows of beautiful St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. They are numerous now with many hundreds of them hanging out in Lighthouse Pond. #photography #wildlife #ECK #birds #BirdsInFlight #birdsky #birders #conservation

A Red-Tailed Hawk during a sudden flyby that scattered the goldfinches that I was photographing. Just like in my recent GBH shot, you can see its nictitating membrane half closed. #Birds #Birding #Wildlife #Nature #Photography #Animals #Photos #Photo #ECK #BirdOfTheDay #BestBeaks

My #birdoftheday #bestbeaks is this White-throated Kingfisher taken in Thailand. One of the best beaks on a Kingfisher for sure. #birds #birdphotography

Hornbill in Kenya fits the...bill. Should see a few of these guys/gals today! #BirdOfTheDay #BestBeaks #YellowElements 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a yellow-billed hornbill (Tockus flavirostris) perched on a slender horizonal tree branch holding a bright green praying mantis in its large bill. It's a medium-sized black and white hornbill with spotted upper wings, a long black tail, and a long, thick yellow-orange downcurving beak with a black stripe through the center of it. It has pale yellow irises and black and white streaking on its head. There are green leafy branches in the foreground, and it's backlit by warm-hued sunlight with a pale blue clear sky in the background behind it.

Really nice capture, HLK! I hope you see some.

That definitely fits the theme! I wonder if it beaked the insect's curiosity... I'll be here all week folks. Don't forget to tip your server.

American White Pelican during breeding season #BestBeaks #BirdOfTheDay #Wildlife #NaturePhotography

A color photograph of the head and torso of an American White Pelican during breeding season. It has a prominent bump called a caruncle on the top of its beak that signifies reproductive readiness (they are on both male and female pelicans) and it will fall off after breeding and eggs are hatched.

Helen is hosting today's #BirdOfTHeDay. My photo contribution of a Palm Warbler taken today fits the Alt theme of #YellowElements, yellow found on any bird. Warblers are migrating through NW Wisconsin.
