Swiss glaciers lose about 20% of ice in five years

Switzerland lost about 19.4% of its glacier ice between 2021 and 2026, with glaciers shrinking by 5.5% in the first eight months of 2026 after a summer of scorching heatwaves and low winter snow, a Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network report found. Lead author Matthias Huss of ETH Zürich said scientists are witnessing glaciers disintegrate as internal meltwater excavates caverns that cause roofs to collapse, rather than only surface retreat. The report found mean glacier thickness fell by between 2.5 metres and 4 metres in 2026, and researchers said several small glaciers have already died this year. MeteoSwiss analysis found April to September 2026 was the hottest and driest half-year since records began in 1864, and noted humanity has emitted about 1.8 trillion tonnes of carbon dioxide while global temperatures have risen by roughly 1.4C. Huss pointed to the former Plattalvafirn or Griess glacier, which lost 99% of its area in 20 years, as an example of rapid landscape change from thick ice to rock deserts. Scientists warned the pace of melt is now an order of magnitude faster than in earlier decades, producing widespread glacier collapse across the Swiss Alps.
