Bird of the Day, theme 'Best Of The Month'

natureSep 30, 202622713,111

Bird of the Day today runs on the theme Best Of The Month, a prompt asking participants to post their favorite bird photo from the past month. The gallery features herons and egrets, raptors and kingfishers, skittish ducks and small songbirds, with many images taken during dawn marsh fishing or river hide encounters. Standouts include kingfishers at Magor Marsh, a Wilson snipe photographed with a perfect reflection, and a rare leucistic house finch sighted in a backyard. Look for close encounters with a barred owl, a juvenile Blue-winged Teal showing wing color, and a Belted Kingfisher landing close for a first-time shot.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestOfTheMonth. I'm going with this sassy diva! #littleblueheron #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky

Little blue heron with purple head and neck and blue body striking a sassy pose as it stands in a shallow pond with algae.

if accurate, these sassy herons have really strangely abrupt ranges (I didn’t know it existed)

Today's #BirdoftheDay theme #BestOfTheMonth. I've already posted a few images of this stunning tricolored heron. But I like this one too. And besides, I only got out once to photograph birds this month. #photography #wildlife #ECK #birds #Birdsky #birders #herons #conservation #nature #biodiversity

Brilliant capture, Michael. Thx for sharing 🙏

LadyGrey0291

I've seen them do this before - I think it is to create shade, so they can see their prey easier (without the light reflecting on the water-surface) - great to have captured this behaviour, so beautifully! 🩶

That wing position is incredible, and the light catching the underside feathers makes the whole shot. Worth getting out for, even just once this month.

Oh... un petit danseur d'opéra 😀

Your photos are a big part of the best of Bluesky.

#Birds #Ducks Rob Crank @robcrank68.bsky.social says today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestOfTheMonth. My favourite for the month, is this male juvenile Blue-winged Teal. An uncommon visitor here & rather secretive. I'd been trying for several days to get a shot showing some wing colour.

A mostly brown duck swimming to the right on water reflecting gold & green. The bird has a grey bill, brown patterned back & breast. Peeking out from under the flight feathers, are a band of green, white and, powder blue.

Rob chose #BestOfTheMonth as #BirdOfTheDay theme; your best shot for September. Trading glances with his barred owl along the trail was my favorite birding moment this month. #birdphotography #ECK #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestOfTheMonth set by @robcrank68.bsky.social - I've taken some good shots this month but think the Kingfishers at Magor Marsh are my favourites for September like this female 😍 😍🪶🦉 #birdingwales #ukbirding #ECK

A great egret fishing in the marsh during a mist filled morning in the marsh. For the #birdoftheday theme of #bestofthemonth #birds #egret #heron #protectnature #EastCoastKin

A great egret stands on some vegetation in the marsh. Its reflection is clear in the water and the golden light of sunrise is hitting the bird

I've likely already posted my #BestOfTheMonth, but this white-throated sparrow, a recent returnee to our area, is a good runner-up for today's #BirdOfTheDay theme. #Bird #BirdPhotography #Photography #Wildlife #Sparrows

Great shot! They are the friendliest of all the birds here in the #PNW. Out in the garden this spring 😊.

The Primer1

Small bird, big presence. There's something about chickadees that feels almost metal, tiny creature completely unbothered by the winter around it.

For #BirdOfTheDay #BestOfTheMonth, my first time getting a photo of a Belted Kingfisher. I had previously only seen them a mile away, so I was thrilled when this guy landed closer.

Bravo, Lori! I attempted a couple today, but they were sooo far 😒

eileenspez1

Beautiful. They are so fast, great catch!

Tom1

Great shot, Lori! In my experience, they fly away as soon as I get within about 300 yards. They never cooperate. 😂

Congrats! They are a tough (wary and speedy) subject.

🪶 Rob has chosen #BestOfTheMonth as #BirdOfTheDay theme; you best shot for September - Quiet month for me; this encounter with a Juvenile Sparrowhawk was definitely the highlight #birdphotography #ECK #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky #Raptor #BirdOfPrey #Hawk

A Female Sparrowhawk sitting in a field of long grass. The bird is left of centre of the shot, facinf the camera and sitting in long grass so its bottom half is not visible.
The bird has a hooked beak with yellow at the base and bright yellow eyes. Its has a brown head with a prominent white eye stripe above the eye. Its back is brown and its breast and underbelly are whitish with strong grey-brown barring throughout.
Its is looking towards the right of the shot so that the right side of its head is shown.
In the foreground an out focus tuft of grass runs along the bottom of the frame, obscuring the bottom of the bird. Some kind of thistle can be seen to the left of the bird with pinkish flowers visible.
The background is long green grass, thistles and other vegetation

@robcrank68.bsky.social's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestOfTheMonth. I think this male downy woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) is probably my best this month. #Birds #Photography #EastCoastKin

A small woodpecker clings to the side of a feeder. It has a short, sharp black beak; a striped black-and-white head with a bright red patch on the back; a black back with a white stripe down the middle; black wings with white spots; and a gray breast.

A great blue heron pauses while fishing at sunrise at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. #BirdOfTheDay #BestOfTheMonth #bird #birdphotography #ECK #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wetland #wetlands #heron #herons

A great blue heron pauses while fishing at sunrise at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this vertical color photograph, a great blue heron faces the camera with its head turned to its right, revealing the left side of its face. Its gracefully curved neck forms a beautiful backward “S” shape. The heron’s reflection appears in the water below, where clumps of green algae float on the surface. A softly blurred wall of cattails fills the background, providing a natural setting that complements the heron.

A beautiful portrait of a great blue heron in the wetland habitat it depends on for survival.
