Canadians observed the fifth annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30, wearing orange to honour residential-school Survivors and remember children who never returned home. Events were held across Newfoundland and Labrador, including St. John’s, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador West, Corner Brook and Miawpukek First Nation in Conne River, where a sacred flame was lit. Colleen Lambert, Miawpukek First Nation director of tourism, culture and recreation, said the prayer service and lighting reaffirm that "every child matters" and "we are going to be here, remembering those children and their families, until we can't." Shirley Flowers, originally from Rigolet, recounted being sent as a child to the Yale School in North West River and described the lasting, intergenerational impact on her family. CBC News scheduled special programming titled Remembering the Children, a 90-minute broadcast live from Parliament Hill beginning at 1:30 p.m. NT.
