Manchester City found guilty of Premier League financial breaches
Man City’s top lawyer mounting a robust defence and providing a full explanation to each of the charges from the Premier League. #ManCity #PremierLeague
Oh shit, I can't find it, where was I. Oh never mind. Let's have a party.
I'll just need to refer to my colleague.
That moment summed up Johnson's premiership, really.
And some idiots voted for this clown. Come on. The clues were everywhere.
Always on top of his brief, was Boris...😎
It was all Peppa Pigs fault
Man City have shown zero remorse and are still belittling the legal process. Hard to see how they can expect any leniency.
Yesterday the CEO described the (very exhaustive) ruling as "an opinion of the Premier League commission that is negative to our interests". Bizarre!
It's also quite funny reading through the report. This section especially: PL: your sponsorship is a direct transfer from a government MC: not at all, it's just a big ol' coincidence that our sponsors get funding from government PL: sure, Jan.
Pure ego. Sheik Mansour and Khaldoon cannot countenance a universe in which any of the following might be true… -they might be subject to rules in the first place -bodies might exist with the power to formally declare them cheats -bodies might exist with the power to apply consequences
The sad thing about comments like this, look at what Mancini said also. Mancini, Soriano - it doesn’t matter to these people. They’ll take their money and success and just move on. It’s the clubs legacy fans and really the players who have been totally let down
You wonder how much of the defiance comes from being directly controlled by petrodollar squillionaires marinaded in a consequence free environment with no meaningful boundaries. Actually not wondering about that much at all really.
Hard to see how the Man City ownership can still be regarded as 'fit and proper people' to control a football club ...
"Shall we adopt this aggressive media and legal strategy?" - No. - No. "Thank you for your media and legal advice, but we are going to do it anyway."
Echoes of Boris Johnson calling the Privileges Committee a “kangaroo court”. Didn’t end well for him.
Many of the charges were about how Man City did not act in good faith and actively tried to hinder the investigations. They’re doubling down on this approach, which hasn’t served them well so far.
Man City's best chance of a reprieve is to go the White House with a Trump jersey and beg for help
Fuck me, the amount of people trying to get this Manchester City cheating scandal to be called 'The Pepstein files' is going to drive me off a cliff. Take a second and think where the joke is here and what you are using to land it. Then stop it.
Shamchester City is a better gag.
Yeah. Needs to stop. About as funny as City being caught 'stealing' titles and trophies.
The reactions to your (very good) post is why I cannot engage on any social media about any sport but especially about football. So many people misunderstanding your point because fundamentally think the premier league is as important as child rape rings and/or that those are funny.
Public-school boy “humor”…or, you know, humour 🙄
It's a blatant attempt to desensitise people to the actual horrific goings on around tRump and Epstien. Irresponsible nonsense. Keep pushing for accountability for those who are in the tRump (aka Epstien) files. This fight will be long, but with persistence the truth will prevail
Lee, it's not a terrible joke, it's an unfortunate one.
The most hard-hitting language, which surely means Manchester City must face the hardest-hitting sanctions Expulsion, and the independent football regulator looking at a forced sale Given the stridency, can normal football business even go on? www.independent.co.uk/sport/footba...
Force a sale. 3-5 year transfer ban. Drop them three or more tiers. Fines, plus compensation to the other teams. Gotta make an example of them.
If they’re kicked out of the PL I hope the EFL refuses to have them unless they get new owners.
Forced sale is essential, keeps the club intact but removes and punishes the beneficiaries. plenty of precedent and obvious owners are unfit to run a football club,
Have to feel for Klopp and that marvellous LFC side of 2018-21. Getting 99/97 points and coming second to these cheats.
Absolutely jaw dropping revelations. It cannot be business as usual after this. The Premier League needs to take the only course of action appropriate- expulsion from the football league and a forced sale of the club. Are criminal investigations warranted?
But why didn't the EPL and all the journalists call this out decades ago? Everyone could see city were playing champagne football on beer income. city have been the 1980s East Germany 800 metre runner of football for 15 years.
“As one source with knowledge of that previous Uefa case says, “it exposes them for exactly who they are and what they did”. Boom. That’s the divs reputation forever and a day….
Remains crazy that Chelsea did ~95% of what Man City did and received essentially no penalties.
They’re fucked. Fuck ‘em. I’ve no sympathy with their supporters. None of them young or old. They enabled this and glorified in the cheating. Fuck ‘em.
The effect on the Man City players and their fans must be devastating, but it is nothing compared to the potential damage to English football if the punishment isn't appropriate. Relegation and stripping of all the titles is the minimum. #mcfc
Owners must be made to sell up too imo.
The more you read and know the facts of it, the more you realise that a pts deduction which gives them one year in the Championship cannot be sufficient.
Their fans knew they were cheating. They just wanted to steal other fans “memories”
Falsifying accounts is a criminal offence. HMRC should be all over this case as well.
Yes, presuming this "irrefutable evidence" turns out to be yet another scam, Man City's punishment has to big enough to deter any other super-wealthy owner from attempting to cheat in a similar way. If #MCFC are just demoted for one season, and allowed straght back up, that would be a farce.
Plus huge points deduction in which ever league they land in. Otherwise it's unfair to the other clubs in that league.
TBF I see exactly why Man City might have assumed people with as much wealth, status and clout as they have could get away with fraud and corruption by simply lying like fuck to anyone who asked questions about it.
Damn I wonder if this says anything about the wider relationship the UK has with the UAE
The idea those guys just stopped cheating in 2018, having not been caught and absolutely shit sure of their invincibility, is laughable. As an aside, the defense appears to be that the crown prince says they didn't cheat, so that must be true. Which is, of course, how the law works in Abu Dhabi.
Man City acting the same way as the President of the US and for the moment (apart from 34 felonies) getting away with it
Delegate them, fine then, strip their titles. Corruption must not be rewarded.
Oligarchs all say the same thing: it’s a hoax. It’s a conspiracy. Russia-style propaganda tactics have spread worldwide. New Law: Any oligarch or politician calling something a hoax or conspiracy is automatically guilty.
"It raises the real question about the credibility of the FFP. That is what this is all about. They give us the message that they can get around it by doing what they want. It means financial fair play will not come in. It is as simple as that."
Manchester City signed Samir Nasri later that summer. Marseille, Chelsea, Man City. All in one man's career. It's no wonder he was bold enough to challenge it as it happened - must have been absolutely sick of being cheated.
Unfortunately, for a lot of fans, it seems a significant period of their fandom based on a lie. Mine included. We can’t change the past, as it’s happened, but you can’t help but feel melancholic still. I hope Arsenal sue the pants of City. Expulsion & financial compensation will help ease this.
Man City can afford some very good legal advice. We can safely assume the legal advice would set out the very real and serious risks of such an aggressive legal strategy. That is the lawyers’ job. Man City have chosen to adopt that strategy anyway.
And then when it all falls apart they'll be like Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland 'You told me, but you did not persuade me"
The Post Office could afford some very good legal advice
Surprised they can get any decent lawyers to act for them at this stage. I know barristers have the cab rank rule so it’s more difficult for them to refuse instructions, but I’d have thought solicitors firms would be running for the hills.
Lawyers outside Man City grounds right now.
"Bloody risk averse lawyers being super cautious again".....
"With extreme wealth comes extreme impunity".
Manchester City's auditor BDO who signed off the accounts during the years in which an Independent Panel found the club cheated the Premier League rules on -- what can only be described as -- an industrial scale: "We remain bound by confidentiality so cannot comment on this occasion."
The credibility of so many organisations and prominent people beyond MCFC will be tarnished by this scandal. This is likely why the club are still taking the defiant approach that they are. They know they've been caught bang to rights and won't win an appeal, just trying to limit the PR damage
You would imagine that at some point they will be subpoenaed in regard to this matter.
The Arthur Andersen of football
This week’s column on how we reassess Arsenal from 2009 until 2018 (and beyond) and how fans have paid the (literal) price of this whole sorry affair 👇🏻🔴⚪️ arseblog.com/2026/09/lega...
Really good. Liked your bit on the pod about the feelings and mickey taking that's gone on over the years too. Arsenal 100% didn't get enough credit for last seasons win. City spent again last Jan to try to win it but we managed to hold them off. I think it will stand to be one our greatest wins
The small consolation from this is that if city hadn't happened, arteta's arsenal arc wouldn't exist either.
Wonder how much money Man CIty paid Freshfields to come up with their argument for why the Premier League are wrong about their hidden funding. It was their sponsor's money. The sponsors just happened to request financial aid from Abu Dhabi, allocated for this purpose. Which was always granted.
As a reminder, we're not talking a cheeky top-up of a few quid here. You know, rounding a deal up to a convenient milion. In 2018 alone, only £11m of their sponsorship was legit. The rest - £134 MILLION QUID (according to the Premier League report) was Abu Dhabi top up funding, via the sponsors.
Whoever had the task of drafting that must have been having a giggle while doing so at the sheer ridiculousness of it.
