Bird of the Day, theme 'EFG'

natureSep 29, 20261928,494

Bird of the Day is a daily community event with the theme #EFG, prompting posts of birds whose first names start with E, F, or G, with an alternate theme of #Paridae. Today's gallery includes lots of herons and egrets, small songbirds and tits, shorebirds and geese, plus odd entries like magpies and owls. Standout posts show a great egret picking up a floating feather at sunrise, a goldfinch basking in morning sunshine, and a Eurasian magpie photographed in Rocky Mountain National Park. Look through the #EFG hashtag for great blue herons fishing, a snowy egret with a crab, an Eurasian blue tit, a flamingo, and tawny owls.

A great egret picks up a feather that was floating in the water. A simple moment made more dramatic by the light of sunrise. For the #birdoftheday theme of #EFG #birds #egret #heron #protectnature #EastCoastKin

A great egret in silhouette. The sun is rising behind it so the sky and water reflect an orange hue. The reflection of the bird is clear as it picks up a feather from the water. It quickly dropped it.

I refuse to look at this pic because I choose to live my life with no egrets.

Rocky Mountain Magpie This Eurasian magpie was far from home in Rocky Mountain National Park. #BirdOfTheDay #EFG #ColorADay #BlueTue #birds #EastCoastKin #RockinTues #ECK #PhotographersUnited

A Eurasian magpie standing in snow in the parking lot of an overlook with the snow-covered Rocky Mountains in the background. It looks like it's posing for the camera. The bird has a black head, breast, beak, eyes, wings, and legs with a white belly. It's facing the camera with its head turned a little bit to the left and up. It looks very proud. There's a pine tree on the left. There's a thick blanket of white clouds above the mountains with a little bit of blue sky in the top right corner.

Could it be a black-billed magpie perhaps? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black-b...

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #EFG. I think this great blue heron fits well. It did a low and slow flyby as i photographed skimmers. Low and slow is good as my tracking skills are not ninja-like. #photography #wildlife #ECK #birds #BirdsInFlight #birdsky #birders #herons #biodiversity #nature

Feathers look sharp, distinct and the clarity of the model's eye is perfect! may I ask- what camera, lens & settings do you use for wildlife? These 'models' were cooperative, especially for a typical HOT AZ summer day.

#BirdoftheDay has #EFG as a prompt today, and I'll take the E for a Snowy Egret - one with a crab for an afternoon snack. #Birds #eck 🪶

A snowy egret (Egretta thula), identifiable by its all-black bill and bright yellow feet, stands in shallow, clear water in San Rafael, California. It holds a captured yellow shore crab (Hemigrapsus oregonensis) in its beak. The water shows ripples and reflections, with the sandy bottom visible.

A Great Egret giving an elegant pose. #BirdOfTheDay #EFG #Birds #Herons #ECK

A Great Egret standing in the green water plants at the edge of a pond. Its body is angled towards the left frame with its neck crossing in front of its body turned to the right so its head is in profile. The water behind it is a soft greenish grey and the light falling on it has a brushstroke effect.

Telephoto shot of a great blue heron perched upright atop the peak of a tall, narrow, weathered tree snag wrapped in green climbing vines. Viewed in profile facing toward its right, the large bird stands tall on its long, dark legs. Its plumage showcases deep slate-gray body feathers, a long pale neck with fine vertical patterns, and its characteristic black head plume extending backward behind its white crown. Its long, sharp bill points straight forward into the open sky. The background features a solid, clear pale blue sky above the dark, soft-focus canopies of forest trees.

Grasshopper Sparrow, a tiny brown bird that generally hides in tall grasses & makes buzzing sounds like its namesake. #EFG #BirdOfTheDay 🪶 #ECK

Small brown bird perched on a diagonal stalk of dry grass, with blurry green foliage in the background. The subject has a small drab pink bill, legs and feet; a light eyering, and a warm tan wash on its upper breast. Its head, back, and wings are a warm caramel color with bold black markings. Its belly is almost white.

A great blue heron fishes from a branch jutting out of the water from a submerged tree at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. #BirdOfTheDay #EFG #bird #birdphotography #ECK #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky #BIF #BirdsSeenln2026 #nature #wildlife #wildlifephotography

Photo by Kort Duce A great blue heron fishes from a branch jutting out of the water from a submerged tree at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, a great blue heron is seen in left profile, standing on a branch and leaning forward as it looks down at the water. The first golden light of morning illuminates the heron. Having just taken a drink, it appears to be settling into position to fish. Its body is reflected in the slightly rippled water below. Although the reflection is not perfectly defined, it adds dimension and depth to the composition. The branch emerges from the water on the right side of the frame at mid-height and extends out of the frame to the left, with several broken nubs protruding above and below it. Fishing line or netting, along with a couple of tangled fish lures caught on the branch, adds an additional layer of context to the scene, hinting at the human presence in this otherwise natural setting. A beautiful portrait of a great blue heron preparing to fish in a wetland habitat so vital for its survival.

A great egret for today's #BirdOfTheDay, theme #EFG, birds beginning with any of those letters (1st name). #Birds #BirdsOfBluesky #Nature #WildlifePhotography

A great egret stands in a shallow stream as it searches for its next meal. The color in the image comes from the stream in the foreground - a bright golden yellow, the result of sunlight and reflections - and the bird's orange bill.
