UK PM Burnham to reform state pension triple lock from 2030
Andy Burnham announces end of triple-lock on the state pension from 2030. It will be replaced by double-lock, slower growth in state pension. Full state pension is already less than 50%of the minimum wage. Poverty awaits future retirees. £500bn of taxes not collected by HMRC since 2010.
I think uncollected tax is the biggest problem in this country.
Why does it have to be state pensions, the lowest of the low, that are affected negatively by changes, and not a wealth tax to be seen anywhere.
Lots of workers on low wages, unable to contribute to a private pension, will work in poverty and retire in poverty.
And pensioner poverty is already on the increase.
And despite working longer than most, we already have decidedly mediocre state pensions when compared with the EU.
Remove the tax subsidy for higher rate taxpayers... Saves £18bn a year. No need to deprive State Pensioners!
Faced with a 'tough choice' - do I hit pensioners or do I hit millionaires - Burnham took the entirely predictable decision to punch down.
yeah labour are offering hope while robbing our future.
Labour attacking the vulnerable again. How very Tory.
Labour doesn't care about your future. It only cares about making fees and moneys for the city of London.
This Mr Burnham! Labour will Pay for this mistake. "full pensions are already less than minimum wage" Tax the rich for goodness sake.
The sickener is the last two lines below, showing just how much tax has not been collected over 15 years... mostly under #Tory governments. £500bn!! The wealthy must be proud of themselves and their Tory placemen, from the luxury of their ivory towers. #ukpolitics #tax #corruption #bbcpm #r4today
The age demographic with the highest percentage of support for RefUK is 65+. Andy Burnham & Labour are trying to send even more votes RefUK's way. ("Blame the immigrants for your low pensions, Clueless Bigots!")
Burnham is just a Starmer in disguise. Soft with billionaires and big business. Empty words over genocide. Attacking pensioners and those on benefits. Utterly hopeless and yet another opportunity lost. I’ll support Greens from now on
In Scotland, we provide free personal care for older people without punishing pensioners. Andy Burnham removing the triple lock would simply repeat the mistakes of Keir Starmer. The blame for the UK’s financial mess lies with successive Westminster governments, not pensioners.
Yes and that care is funded entirely through the pittance allowed us by wm. Burnham is funding care in england by punishing pensioners throughout uk. But why punish pensioners in Scotland when our government already funds it. Just another instance of Scotland doesn’t matter. Get out of uk now please
Exactly and Scotlands water is owned by us!
Westminster always takes from the poor, instead of charging the rich. They will never benefit the working class, no matter which party is in No. 10.
He’s going to use rejoining the EU as a vote winner at the next election! We cannot allow WM to bargain with Scotlands resources to suit their needs and not ours!
Not sure if I've got this right but as a Scottish Pensioner am I going to be penalised to help the English Social Care system after 2030? Maybe Burnham is thinking that by 2030 Scotland will no longer be part of the UK.
Its disgusting, always making the poorest in society pay. But like Starmer, its his nail, Starmer went after pensioners heating allowance and he's gone after the pensioners as well. Ticktock Burnham, you've just lost.
This is so true. And it demonstrates 𝙮𝙚𝙩 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣 how little the "British" government cares about 🏴 Scotland. We need all the powers. And that means independence.
And to punish pensioners when HMRC have apparently been 'unable' to collect £500billion in taxes since 2010 is absolutely disgusting. Go after the fkn millionaires and the TAX EVADERS, leave oor pensioners alone...in fact the UK pension is a fkn joke. Independence for Scotland NOW. 🏴💙
Well John, what's your answer.. independence? You should give that a try,I'm sure there's absolutely NOTHING this English nationalist govt can do,it's a cartel,£3tr offshore John, and Trillions in debt,YET WE SUFFER daily at the hands of these genocide enablers, these corrupt cartels(NOT GOVTS)TRY INDY
So he really is ending the triple lock eh. Fair play.
Sounded like a sort of 2 and half lock. Inflation or 2.5% and "earnings over time".
Pensioner here. Fair enough. Need to sort things so generation rent can be okay when it’s their turn.
If he's ending triple lock to fund social care, he could just be shifting from cash to benefits in kind for essentially the same people. That might soften the blow.
I’d like to see the detailed financials on this. I just can’t see that ending the triple lock, but maintaining cost of living rises for pensioners, is anything like enough to fund the sort of care changes people are expecting from the rhetoric. There’s got to be more that we’re not being told.
Sounds like he’s ending the calling of it the Triple Lock. If it sticks with 2.5%, inflation and earnings it’s still the Triple Lock. He needs to specifically state what he’s dropping.
He’s going to be really busy after the next election! Good job he doesn’t need to do anything for the next 2.5 years so he’s got time to prepare, eh? 🤦
2024: Labour's Keir Starmer, "I firmly believe that the British public want... to make Brexit work" 2026: Labour's Andy Burnham, "Brexit has done more harm than good.. We need higher growth and prosperity for Britain"
'The British right like to talk about taking back control...NEVER let them forget it was them who gave it away.' Andy Burnham PM. 💯well said. Brexit gave away so much, to Trump, to Putin and to chance.
We left to finally be free of EU regulation that meant teacups had to be stuck to their saucers.
Can't say we didn't try it. We did. It was seven shades of shit. The rejoin tipping point is tipped.
The British public would like something to work
I still can't really understand how Starmer got it SO wrong. All the indicators were there that the majority of the British public thought brexit was and is a disaster
Finally a PM who dares speak the truth! BrexShit is a really expensive luxury belief, whose costs only elites can afford
"Brexit has done more harm than good." Andy Burnham says he will 'lay out options' at the next reset summit to tighten the relationship between the EU and UK
SPOILER ALERT: Brexit didn't do ANY good. It's been a complete disaster from start to finish.
Tell the EU you're sorry and beg for forgiveness. Then re-join at whatever cost. Cut and run from Brexit, the second largest country "self-own" in history outside electing Trump a second time.
I hope they tell him that he will only get what he wants if he agrees to FoM (in both directions).
Is that the Brexit Scotland didn't vote for?
it might backfire horribly on him but if so, boy is Andy Burnham going out with a bang. Do wonder if that speech could only have been made by someone who was out of Westminster for the madness years & isn't as scared of the public - he's gambling on them still grudgingly respecting conviction
Personally I absolutely love it. Brave and exciting. The exact opposite of the past and a positibe message that might push the fascists off the front page every day.
Given the extent to which Restore, Reform and the Greens have at times surged in support, I don't think there's any great lack of support for conviction politics. But the big difference, of course, is that Burnham in No 10 has to deliver on it, not just agitate. Still, highly impressive.
I think Labour are on track again Of course, global factors are less benign than in 1997, and much can go wrong But this is the best version of Labour we can get in 2026 And at least we can hope this PM will not suddenly side with the Yanks in some stupid war.....
You may see it as a gamble - but what is the alternative? Starmer-like caution, mustn’t upset the RW press or the hero voter? I believe he is teeing up a compelling, honest proposition, real change, asking voters what sort of Britain they really want.
He gambling in people understanding it’s actually what is right for the country and them. He’s gambling on people understanding he’s actually doing the job, doing what’s needed.
It reminded me of Luke Skywalker at the start of Return Of The Jedi. He's been off getting schooled up by Yoda on some moon or whatever but now he's back and he's absolute NAILS
I don't agree with such an ambivalent take from Gaby Hinsliff. To me, Burnham's was an exceptional speech: confident, coherent, a vision of what the country should be and a plausible plan on how to get it there. Leadership. A long way to go yet but Labour now in pole position to win in 2028.
He's said the election will be in 2029. He's not going anywhere. Commentators are addicted to drama.
The Tories promised that they'd fix it but did next to nothing even as they sought to all but bribe pensioners with the triple lock pension. Now we'll have the right demanding to know how it's all going to be funded... This needs solving and it would be so good if partisanship could be put aside.
Honestly if this happens to you you'll just hope to God that Burnham manages to do this
I remember the appalling Johnson saying he had a social care plan ready to go. He lied. Again.
It's worth mentioning that the UK state pension remains low by international developed country standards. The triple lock was introduced to try to tackle that and whilst they have risen, they are still low. A great many British pensioners still lead a poor life.
Sadly any chance of "it would be so good if partisanship could be put aside" ain't gonna happen while these 2 are on the opposition benches:
Tories will never be anything other than partisan. They will always put party before country.
Sadly all we get from the tories is the back to the 70s crap.
SNAP POLL / By 48% to 28%, Britons support Andy Burnham's proposal to change the triple lock in order to help fund part of a national care service yougov.com/en-gb/daily-... yougov.com/en-gb/daily-... yougov.com/en-gb/daily-...
Asked without connecting it to the triple lock, 74% of Britons support setting up a National Care Service, free at the point of use and funded by govt spending All Britons: 74% support / 11% oppose Lab: 84% / 5% LD: 85% / 8% Grn: 82% / 7% Con: 68% / 18% Ref: 67% / 7% yougov.com/en-gb/articl...
This is big news because this was the most contentious policy. I think many people don't understand the triple lock so this number might increase if people really understood that the impact might be 1 or 2% and if inflation is high the pension will go up by that amount.
It's early days and I have my doubts this will hold, but Burnham may have the sauce after all (at least on welfare and economics)
Hopefully this will be the pattern longer term. bsky.app/profile/youg...
This was the most contentious policy and a lot of people don't understand triple lock. I think Andy Burnham can sell this to the rest of the public to make this work to get a Social care system free at the point of use.
magnets' ball knowing INTENSIFIES bsky.app/profile/youg...
I'm astonished by the margins, but not by the support: People are civic minded and practical. It turns out if you explain your reasoning for something, and are trusted to deliver that something, they are willing to support you.
If the triple lock on pensions will be scrapped. The 1st priority is to fix Pension Credit - the top up for the lowest earning pensioners to give them a basic minimum income. Shamefully many 100,000s of the poorest pensions still miss out on what they're entitled to.
The people who really suffer are those on small private pensions who are a couple of pounds over pension credit limit. They miss out on all the additional pension credit benefits on virtually the same income.
Bearing in mind the government knows their income then why should they have to claim?
Andy Burnham is definitely wrong on some key issues: refugees, far-right groups, the continued proscription of Palestine Action. But it does make a nice change to have a PM who is not wrong on absolutely every issue, and is actually decent on quite a few.
As someone who's seen his work up close I can tell you not to bother liking his policies. He'll change them at the drop of a hat. Watch this space😡
Like fuck, he gaslights us on Gaza with Ed the liar Miliband telling us he is tough on settlements but can’t say the words war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, ethnic cleansing or apartheid. Has no plan for the economy is going to rip the triple lock. His immigration policies are racist…..
"and is actually decent on quite a few"
He has balls, I'll give him that.
Good "to have a PM who is not wrong on absolutely every issue." Which hell do we live in?
Just needs a bit of tweaking on a few issues and all is good.
Pensions are going up 3.9% because they have a Triple Lock NHS drug prices have been going up at an average rate of 5-7% a year, EVERY year, for the last 16 years We don't talk about this 'TRIPLE LOCK'. Which has cost the NHS tens of billions Because it is for the BILLIONAIRES
How does it work? Every year the drugs companies increase the price of their drugs to the NHS by double inflation or more. And the Government just goes along with this scam, and we all know why $$$.
NHS drug cost is ballooning out of control and it is one of the biggest factors the NHS has 'no money'. But of course this benefit to billionaires isn't unaffordable. It isn't even mentioned.
#Newsnight 1030pm LIVE @BBCTwo @BBCNews • the biggest political gamble of Andy Burnham’s career so far? The triple lock will go by 2030 to help pay for a new national care service for England. Would YOU support that at the next gen elex?
Definitely - the triple lock can't stay in place forever. The care service needs paying for and sorting out - it's a bold and brave idea, something we've been lacking in political leadership for a long time.
You forgot to mention how families unlucky enough to experience dementia will no longer lose everything?
Definitely, and I’m approaching pension age.
It will affect me when I retire and I support it at next GE. I'd rather have a pension that goes up by not as much to pay for the national care service. Which I may also end up needing. It's an investment in my eyes.
Yes. Social care for the elderly means more to society than the triple lock.
Victoria, I do hope that you will balance this point with the care needs of thousands who suffer dementia and other long term conditions who currently pay £5K+ PER MONTH (My Mum).
My latest blog piece, thoughts on Burnham's conference speech: Hopey change and changey hope. A traditional Labour leader's speech full of promises of jam tomorrow but containing very little of substance while Scotland was overlooked. weegingerdug.wordpress.com/2026/09/29/h...
Pensioners in Scotland, Wales and the North of Ireland having their pensions clipped to fund an English care system. Of course it has to be after 2030 as the 24 GE manifesto specifically pledged to retain the triple lock. What do pensioners outwith England get in return?
Now then we weren't completely ignored because he quite plainly said that he believes in the union so basically Scotland, Cymru + NI can suck it up as far as he's concerned.
Triple lock to pay for social care i England. Will the triple lock still apply in Scotland and Wales or will we lose out as the savings will only be spent in England??
It's the hope that kills you. Literally!
