Gianni Infantino hints at larger cash pledge to FIFA members

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a letter to the six continental confederations that a greater amount of money could be distributed to FIFA members from the governing body's estimated £4.4bn cash reserves. Infantino wrote he would support "the greatest level of additional funding that can responsibly be delivered" but added "I will not prejudge the amount" and said a single figure can start discussion but cannot complete policy. The comment follows backlash over Infantino's aborted FIFA Forward Enterprise plan to sell stakes in the World Cup and other competitions, which prompted calls for his resignation. UEFA and Concacaf have demanded FIFA pay $10m (£7.5m) to each of FIFA's 211 members from reserves. The proposal will be considered by the FIFA Council when it meets on 15 October. Football Association chair and FIFA vice-president Debbie Hewitt has asked Infantino to release all documents on the FFE plan and called for an independent review. Infantino is due to stand for a fourth term in the March 2027 presidential election, with potential challengers having until 18 November to register.
