ICE agent Gregory Feathers identified in Houston shooting

newsSep 29, 20262112,107

The Texas Tribune identified Gregory Feathers as the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who witnesses say fired through an open van window and killed 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston nearly three months ago. An official familiar with the investigation, records including a Form I-213 mistakenly released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the van passenger who identified the shooter from a photograph each corroborated Feathers as the shooter. Feathers retired from ICE and was rehired within the past two years, a period that overlapped with the second Trump administration’s recruitment push for former officers. Records also list Feathers as calling paramedics and name him as one of two arresting agents involved in the pursuit. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has defended the shooting as an act of self-defense, and Feathers has not been charged; the local district attorney is empaneling a grand jury while the FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and DHS conduct separate probes and the Texas Department of Public Safety is assisting the DA’s investigation. The federal government has withheld the identities of most ICE agents involved in shootings since President Trump returned to office, and members of Congress have been kept from those names in this case.
