Cornell Sexual Assault Investigation to Be Reopened

newsSep 28, 2026344,711

Tompkins County District Attorney will revisit its decision not to pursue criminal charges after a civil lawsuit alleges a former Cornell student was drugged and gang raped by seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity. The lawsuit says the assault occurred in October 2024 and names seven defendants including Diego Sarabia, Matthew Ingalls, Jonathan Newell, Winston Lee, Gillio Lopes, Scott Norris, and Scott Kretzschmar. Outrage following publication of the complaint and excerpts of the victim's six-page statement prompted renewed scrutiny; the DA had previously published limited quotes from that statement when declining to file charges. In the wake of the reopening, Wells Fargo confirmed Diego Sarabia is no longer employed there. Cornell student journalist Cereese Qusba and the independent Cornell Daily Sun played a key role in breaking the story. Ithaca's mayor announced an immediate moratorium on permitting Greek life events until Cornell produces new standards for addressing sexual assault. The reopened inquiry could lead prosecutors to reconsider charging decisions and will increase pressure on the university and local officials to change disciplinary and permitting practices.

cw: rape (pls don't read if learning details is too much for you) In the Snapchat, the student Scott Kreteschmar writes "diego went 7 min ago and is not afk sooooo" I had to look up what "afk" means. "Used on online gaming, this literally means Away From Keyboard." –– Urban Dictionary

Do you really believe the Cornell 7 should have their lives ruined over this? YES!!!

Joe Flynn7

When you're too evil for Wells Fargo...

Desperado D. Mayor7

Bare fucking minimum, all seven of these men need to be removed from polite society and the boys club sociopaths who knew what they did and chose to give them a slap on the wrist need to be ousted from their positions. This shit is not okay. We have to be better than this.

Mr Cairo 🐸6

It's great when karma catches up to criminals

Mothma'am4

No peace for any of them ever again. Same for every single of them in that fucking chat or house that knew what was going on and chose silence.

1. There better be a conviction of Wells Fargo is sued. 2. Diego is learning a lesson of what happens when there isn’t a black man fall guy. The next darkest dude gets the heat

Diego Sarabia reportedly planning to use the Kavanaugh defense: "I drank beer with my friends. Almost everyone did. Sometimes I had too many beers. Sometimes others did. I liked beer. I still like beer."

Without commenting specifically on the allegations at issue, my recommendation to the Cornell board of trustees in 2003 was to abolish fraternities and sororities at the university.

I wish there was a more serious movement within the academy to reform our institutions to create mechanisms of actual accountability so students, faculty, and staff can rid ourselves of leadership that regularly fails everyone but their donors.

Justin11

if there’s a moratorium on greek life while this goes on, it means there’s an understanding that greek life facilitates sexual assault. they should be banned forever.

Brandon Bishop8

Good. Really need to deal with university "self-policing."

Andy Karlson6

Somebody is stepping into the appalling leadership vacuum caused by Ivy League cowardice at Cornell.

Crary5

I did not go to Cornell, but I grew up nearby and was very aware of the party culture in decades past. This strikes me as the right move. Good for Ithaca, and good for Mayor Cantelmo.

Zach Bigalke (he/him/his)4

This is good. Better would be a permanent ban on all Greek life at every college and university.

Adam Bursi2

Far more brave than anything the Cornell administration has done anytime recently.

JudithFlanders2

I’m not an American, so genuine q: why on earth are frats/sororities referred to as ‘Greek’? Is there anything Greek about them apart from some random letters they think make them appear—educated? Sophisticated? Also, why aren’t they afraid the Greeks will sue for defamation? A slam dunk case surely

A former Cornell student was drugged and raped by seven men. Two were expelled; others only received sanctions including suspensions, workshops or essays. No one was charged. Now the DA has reopened the case. #OpDeathEaters
