Orange Order parade blocked by protesters on Garvaghy Road

Hundreds of protesters formed a human chain on Garvaghy Road in Portadown to block an Orange Order march after a court this week gave limited permission for the Drumcree parade. The independent adjudicator ruled a smaller, silent procession of 35 Orangemen could go ahead, the first time the march has been allowed down Garvaghy Road since 1997 and after the Parades Commission banned it annually from 1998. Sinn Féin leaders, including First Minister Michelle O'Neill, led the counter-rally and called the decision a "disgrace," urging the British government and police to intervene and saying the approval put the Good Friday Agreement "into question." Democratic Unionist party leader Gavin Robinson said O'Neill was inflaming opposition by joining protesters and argued the lawful march should be allowed. Political leaders in Britain and Ireland, including Prime Minister Andy Burnham, appealed for calm amid fears of renewed sectarian clashes on the road.

Just to fully underline how spiteful this shit is for those unaware: On the left is the route the Orange Order have been ordered to take for the past 3 decades without trouble. On the right is the route that has brought hundreds of cops to Drumcree. The only motivation is sectarian antagonism.

I genuinely cannot believe we're back here. It's so viscerally upsetting.

Look at this map when you hear the orange folk talk about what smol beans they are and how they’ll hardly even be noticed quietly marching to their church and they don’t understand why everyone’s so mad about a wittle pawade…If that were so, they’d go the way they’ve gone for the last 27 years.

A good summary of how these people are just being shitty for the sake of it. #SpeirGorm

the idiocy carries on and on and on and on and #nornIron #garvaghy #SpeirGorm

For those who don't know (and I'm mostly addressing my American friends) the orange order only want to walk road on the right as it brings them through a Catholic area. It's analogous to KKK wanting to march through Harlem.

Parades and protest marches get slighted as trivial. Symbolic politics at most. Marches and parades are politically substantial. Who has the right to be in the street? Who has the right to feel safe at home?

I have yet to hear a logical answer to the question of why they are so determined to parade through an area where they are not welcome. If not to antagonise the local community, then why? They had decades of triumphalist marches through catholic areas, and they don't want to lose that sense of power

How has it come to this?? Is all the cross community progess they wax lyrical about all lies or exaggerated?? Did the riots over the summer restoke something? Or are we clueless in the south about what still goes on in the north? #speirgorm

I say this as a Scots Protestant who grew up in Ireland in the 90s: anyone who wants to march through communities where they are patently unwelcome is a thug, and there should be no moral equivalence between these thugs and those who want to live peacefully in their own homes without intimidation.

@news.sky.com @itvnews.bsky.social @bbcnewsnight.bsky.social This is a massively important point that is getting little coverage on your Drumcree coverage. 28 years of peace at risk out of spite and plain sectarianism 😡😡
