George Russell takes commanding pole at Azerbaijan Grand Prix

George Russell (Mercedes) took pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, topping qualifying by 0.837 seconds. The session was held Friday, September 25, ahead of Saturday’s race, the 15th of 23 rounds this season. Russell beat Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and Oscar Piastri (McLaren) to P1. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) crashed in Q1, could not continue and will start 16th. Russell called the margin "probably the biggest of my career," reflecting how dominant his lap felt. Antonelli’s heavy drop on the grid hands Mercedes a split starting position that could alter both Mercedes’ team tactics and the drivers’ title battle on race day.

That was the lap of his life 👏🏼 Baku is the perfect circuit to combat the effects of his lower powered engine against Kimi's. Mercedes don't want Russell to be world champion, they need a heel to make their prodigy look even better and therefore more marketable.
