Oscar-winning actor Susan Sarandon and Hacks star Hannah Einbinder were among people detained by New York Police Department officers on Thursday during a Jewish Voice for Peace sit-in protesting Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he prepared to address the United Nations General Assembly. Agence France-Presse footage shows officers cuffing Sarandon; protesters at the demonstration held banners reading "Stop Arming Israel" and "End the Genocide." An NYPD spokesperson said officers responded to reports of an unscheduled demonstration blocking an intersection, that Community Affairs issued warnings to leave, and that multiple individuals who did not comply were taken into custody; the spokesperson did not give an arrest total. Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier and New York City council member Chi Ossé were also arrested. Inside the General Assembly, dozens of envoys walked out as Netanyahu began his speech, during which he criticized Britain and France, saying they "invented the term" colonialism. Both Sarandon and Einbinder have spoken publicly this year about industry backlash for protesting Israel and the personal costs of speaking out on Palestine.

Yesterday, Benjamin Netanyahu spoke at the UN general assembly. It was his first time in New York City since Zohran Mamdani, the mayor, vowed to arrest him for war crimes. Before his speech, dozens of attendees walked out in protest – while Netanyahu labeled them "moral cowards."
